Re gear Wrangler YJ Dana 30 & 35 4.0 Manual 1993
« on: September 15, 2009, 12:26:58 PM »

Hi,

Can anyone offer any advice? I want to put 4.56 gearing on to the above, I have the gearing kits and the bearing and seal kits for both axles.

My concerns are how do I know what shims to put on below the big bearing that is pressed on the pinion?

Thanks in advance Maf

Thanks for quick answers...

Just found a local transmission shop and they are willing to help, it's even close to my garage and they can come over during the install.

Hopefully this is the way forward, really didn't need a massive cost etc....

Cheers Maf

Ah, the joys of setup bearings, pinion depth, backlash, axle spreading, slingers, baffles, ring gear and non ring gear shim stacks, mesh dye, preload, etc etc.And then doing it maybe half a dozen times to get it right!
I taught myself to do my front D30 on the CJ after a failure. It was the flippant attitude and comment from a local expert who  told me "It'll be a grand" without even looking at the failure mode that spurred me on.I thought, if you can do it,then so the hell can I!You do need a few "specialised"tools, usually that you can make. However, don't be put off, just be sure you have the patience and mindset to approach it methodically and write every shim set-up and result clearly.

Good luck with it all.

Been there, done that. Just take your time and make sure it's right. And then do this-->  :wave-fingersmiely: to everybody who says it's a 'specialist only' job.

The guy at the gearbox shop is very helpful and said he'll take the old bearings off, check the shims and refit with the new bearings to the pinion and diff carriers.

Two years ago I fitted a second hand ring and pinion without a thought, no problems. Should get diff and pinions back today, fingers crossed and then some gentle road miles... also fitted an Aussie locker in the front....

Thanks again Maf

Thanks again for all advice and links... pleased to say that the Wrangler is all back together and a short road test went really well, the 4.56 gears have transformed it, nice low down power... will keep up the gentle road miles before off roading and next months punch hunt  :icon_winkle:

Had a result... This Wrangler was in the machine shop with broken rear carrier (non LSD), the guys swapped all the shims and fitted the new bearings, I swapped this for a spare LSD with carrier that I had... win win. Job went ok, fitted Aussie locker in front diff, tight squeeze, steering arms in way... rear had to swap the shims over, only 0.5mm in difference.. once I got this sorted all happy days.

Happy days.

Front locker is quite on road, used 75/90 oil, have heard 85/140 is even better? Will see how it goes. Very happy... looking forward to trying locker... this lane was tough last weekend, slippy wet steep gnarly rocks, lots of spitting waffles...will be nice to see how much easier it is now...

Thought you might like to see this, my mate is off roadin in Canada... 37" on... he also has 39"...sweet
