WJ 2.7 CRD (03) - Engine Idle Issue
« on: September 21, 2009, 12:12:25 PM »

Hey everyone!

Could anyone advise me on the cause of my GC CRD engine idle being erratic?  Seems to only be when engine is at rest (sitting in drive/at the lights etc), cant notice anything when driving along.  Doesnt go too high, probably changes between 600 and 1000ish.  Its not causing any problems, but i would like to have it idle normally!  It doesnt make any difference if its hot or cold outside, or if it has been run, or sitting over night.  Any suggestions for things I could try to fix this would be awesome.

Cheers
Greg

generally called hunting, it's when the engine management can't work out where to set the idle. it senses a low idel so increases it then realises it's too high and lowers it but never finds the correct figure. sometimes it sorts itself out sometimes it doesn't. probably not enough of a problem to flag up an error code as well

maybe it could be the MAF or mass air flow meter or sensor??? Or TPS  sensor.I am not too clued up on these later jeeps but io know both of these can cause idle problems

Do this....

Turn the ignition key until the digital odometer displays, repeat three times in succession and then back to "On" (On/Off, On/Off, On/Off, On). At the fourth "On" the odometer will be replaced with codes. If no codes are present then "Done" will appear.

Tell us what the odometer days. It may give more than one code or none. Codes start with a P followed by 4 numbers.

Thanks for all the replies!  Checked the Odometer (which took a few go's to get the right sequence) and it comes up with P1685.  Just checked on wjjeeps.com and it says:

"P1685
Skim Invalid Key
The engine controller has received an invalid key from the SKIM".

From a quick google it looks like the SKIM is a Sentry Key Immobiliser Module.  Didnt even realise i had a problem with my security system  :010:  I'm guessing this wont affect engine idle?
