French Lessons!
« on: September 25, 2009, 03:42:38 PM »

Got your attention did it?

This is something I've been meaning to do for years,....... just too much else that was important.
Sink the rear lights on the YJ into the tub to avoid being smashed to a million bits of plastic by trees! or 'frenching them in' as the Hot Rod mags used to term it.
Easy eh? Take as long as it does to read so far eh? So I thought!
Just finished last night and this lunch about 6 hours.
Make very accurate template cut hole and then realise top half of light is above wheel arch floor level so cut floor. Break out 4mm nut serts and finish off oh and then the lights don't work cos there's no earth.... do that and silicon gap , very small on inside of tub floor. Job done....

See told you wouldn't take long... Worth doing tho as I've seen no end of broken ones over the years.

Just need to resolve the rear no plate light with a small LED item for the MOT.

Front axle out at the moment..... after all these years of "I don't like ARBs... too complex expensive and blah blah blah....." I decided that after 8 years of the lockrite in the front  I was now fed up with the turning circle of a tanker so 'eat my words' I've tracked down a second hand rebuilt ARB and thats going in.

Just need the solenoid from ARB £68 arghh youre kidding.........

So anoraked the interweb and Stateside a guy recommended a MAC valve part no 35A-AAA-DDBA-1BA $17

Great but UK suppliers have none in on back order for 6 weeks and £33 (why?)

Any ideas?  Have a good weekend all. Jez

I've heard the same about the MAC valves and despite having to swap over the harness from ARB to MAC and solder in place...it does seem worthwhile.

If you do it, please report back!

In the past, I've bought from 4by4connection in the States http://www.4by4connection.com/arbairlocrep.html but at $62 plus shipping maybe it's no longer worthwhile.

Might be worth keeping this write-up http://www.yellowdefender.com/how_to_tips/arb_sol/index.htm to hand as although people say the solenoid is not serviceable....this guy thinks differently. Don't think it counts as "servicing" but last time I had one fail, removing and thoroughly cleaning it did the trick.

Best of luck with the installation.

In summary
Cutting accurate template is a bugger, better to make hole too small at first..... obviously!!!!
Nutserts or rivnuts are a godsend.... seen this mod done with woodscrews!!!
Used Stainless cap headed bolts or allen bolts as I always called them!
Black around hole is undercoat and satin black to cover raw steel and prevent rust.

Now if I had a front axle on I could reverse into a tree to test em??!!

Nothing special that I am aware of about the ARB solenoids/Valve, I just get ones from the local pneumatics supplier.  Cool mod for the lights.

The only bit you would have to add change is the plug to connect it to the ARB loom as they use RC battery type connectors.

So....for a pneumatics ignoramus like me.. :017:..anywhere you can suggest as a supplier in West Midlands and anything special I have to ask for or just take in an ARB solenoid for pattern?

Just take yours along, then its guaranteed you have the same thing, its just to do with the ports and which are normally open and which are normally closed, and the solenoid is just 12vdc.  Not sure of suppliers in the west midlands as I use Airco in Cheltenham as they are local to me.  Just have a search on yell.co.uk or something.
