Hi all

Serviced my 2.5td mk1 pre facelift 1996 P reg cherry today. Its a VM unit that I havent yet aquired a manual for that matches my engine so here goes.

Fitted a new fuel filter today. I primed the filter and made sure the bowl had fuel in. Cranked engine and it ran for a short while, then coughed and died. Does this mean i will have to bleed the system? Will I now need to bleed the hoses & pump. Is this a 2 man job. Lookin at some literature, u have to loosen of the bleed on the pump, crank engine till fuel comes out, then secure the bleed. Don't want to appear stupid, but if i am in the cab crankin the engine. As soon as i stop, will the air get back into the pump from the bleed? Will I need someone cranking why i wait for the fuel to appear then tighten up before the cranking stops?

Is it the same to bleed the injectors too? will i need to be there to tighten back up before the cranking stops and air is drawn back into injector?

Hi when you bled this did the priming pump go hard so you could not pump it . if not there is still air in your system . try pumping the primer with no bleed screws open

No joy. Cranks over sweet but will not fire. Checked glow plugs. Reading 0.1ohms

Anyone close to wolverhampton that has oil burner experience that may be able to come assist me to tomorrow (sunday).....

.... that is if I havent figured it out by then

open the bleed then pump till your  arm falls off then shut the bleed then pump till the pump goes hard then try and start undoing the diesel pipe nut at the top of the injector and then cranking it will help purge trapped air

I opened the bleed on the pump. I used the plunger on top of the Fuel filter to pump with. Is this correct?

When I done this fuel pumps out of the bottom of the filter through the water drain off valve. Should this happen?

I feel Im doing something of a schoolboy error somewhere. I'll be out and about later so am picking up some new glow plugs. Mights as well change these whilst I am at it. They are reading only 0.1ohms rather than 0.2-0.5.

Try again 2moz now. Off out with the family now to look at some horses.

There shouldn't be fuel coming out the bottom.

at the bottom of the fuel filter is a black round bezel that can be undone, this then allows and collect water to drain onto the floor. this bezel has an o ring to seal it when done up tight. this might have perished slightly. on the filter pump the primer plunger should be used until it is hard. then undo the nuts ontop of the injectors and try pumping again and some diesel should come out. lock the primer plunger down and see what happens when you start the engine, some paper or rags laid over the injectors will stop most of the sprayed diesel. when running tighten up the nuts ontop of the injectors.

You guessed it. Was a schoolboy error by myself. When i re-assembled the fuel filter after cleaning out the bowl, i hadn't quite fitted the little seal on the water drain off properly. Stripped down, re-built correctly, pumped till hard started first time.

good to hear you got a result, most people overlok that little seal which can pinch and not seal when tightening up
