Need some 101 off-road schooling!
« on: November 04, 2009, 06:21:31 PM »

I'm going to apologise now for what is probably a really dumb question, but i dont have any off-roading experience!

I've been wondering what happens when you go off-roading and take your jeep through a huge amount of water i.e. so it goes over the bonnet, maybe gets inside - how do the electrical components survive?!  I saw a video on here that had a wrangler going through a "puddle" where the only thing left above the water line was the snorkel (the passenger was swimming  :icon_eek:)...how the heck did the car's engine management/radio/battery/ignition etc etc go through all that, and still work?!  There was another video where the guys had fashioned a make shift air intake, and then plowed through so much water that it filled inside, and drove home in same car!

two factors come into play, the obvious is the preparation of the vehicle, electrics can be positioned and to some extent waterproofed, the other less obvious element is technique, in its most basic form, drive at the right speed through water and you can create a bow wave, this will push the water infront of the car creating a low point in the body of water just where your engine is.

if you make it to a Birtys event I'm sure there will be someone who will show you some pointers or depending where your based you might find a p&p site that offer driver training, we do at CBOffroad.

what stew means is that he has a slight phobia of water crossings in his jeep.
what stew doesn't mean is to not come to an event. the best way to lern is from other drivers with experience.

Some of the vehicles that do deep water are seriously modified to cope with it, everything vulnerable is extended out of the way.

That makes a lot of sense!

I get the feeling it may just be a good look at what i'm gonna get myself into one day!  Although, not sure i'd be doing the hummer thing...thats just insane!!  Hopefully though if i do get into some deep water/mud/whatever, there'll be be some nice people with a winch willing to drag me out.

How often do you guys go offroad?

On a totally off thread topic, but following from a post i started a while ago (didnt want to bore everyone by bringing it back up again) about tyres - i have finally ordered a set of Cooper Discoverer ATR's, getting them fitted next Friday.  Really wanted the General Grabber AT2's, but seems no-where in the UK can get them at the moment - all on back order in the size i wanted with no date on when they would be available.  Ive managed to get the Coopers for £89 all in per corner.  Hopefully im a bit more ready now to go off the tarmac  :greggmo:

I'm really glad to hear they're good - i've been dithering for months on what to get.  Didnt go with the muds cause its also my daily driver...one day though when i've won the lottery, i'll have two sets of wheels  :icon_biggrin:
