High Level Instrument Cluster XJ Diesel

Hi All

My seemingly never ending saga of my beloved cherry. Lookin at the workshop manual I was given by previous owner, it says that there is a self test mode on the instrument cluster by holding in the trip reset whilst turning on the ignition. I have tried this and nothing at all happens. FYI again, mine is a 2.5td limited cherry 1996 p mk1 pre facelift. Does anyone know if my model has this self test function? If it does and the self test does not operate, do I take it that the cluster is buggered?

If I do have to change my cluster, is it just a matter of plugging a new one in? What do I do about the mileage readings?

Merry Chrimbo one and all

my mk1 didn't have a self test mode. couldn't even get the error codes to show.

pull old one out plug new one in. the digital tacho should reset to the mileage stored in the ecu (if i'm correct). i wouldn't worry about the mileage readings as no-one guarantees them nowadays. just keep the mot's and note the change on them

There is no diagnostic function on the early clusters. The mileage stored on the PCM is independant to the mileage shown on the electro-mechanical odometer. Just swap it into the replacement unit or 'clock' the replacement to the correct mileage. (Yes, this is perfectly legal before anyone asks)

This may be of some use to you, just read the haynes manual for cherokee (I'm having issues myself with a poorly cherry and needin fault codes!)
for self diagnosis codes 1991-1997 models:

To display the codes, turn the ignition key on,off,on,off and finally on. the codes will begin to flash on the check engine light.the light will blink the number of the first digit then pause and blink the number of the second digit, for example code 23,the MAT sensor circuit, would be indicated by 2 flashes, then a pause (about 2 seconds) followed by 3 flashes. if more than 1 code is being accessed the pause between codes is about 3 or 4 seconds.
If this is what your trying to access and I've not missed the point I have a list of the codes in the manual and I'm pretty sure you could find them on the net! good luck  :icon_biggrin:

BOP is right, if you mean you;re looking for diagnostic trouble codes, they are flashed up on the Check Enginr light.
