waterproofing soft top
« on: January 02, 2010, 12:08:44 PM »

Can anyone recommend a good method for waterproofing the canvas soft top of my Jeep TJ? It's only water resistant but I've heard it can be treated to make it waterproof.

water proof, that's optimistic :003: my hard top ain't even water proof :hysterical:

I would assume there would be a product similar to canvas tent waterproffer on the market and I'm sure I have seen such a product on 4WD

the spray on waterproofing for tents doesn't cover a big area for the can size so expect alot. talk to a camping shop about cotton tent waterproofing.

fabric cant be made waterproof/laminated once cut and sewn. The seams can be retaped, but this is tricky and its easier to use dubbing along the stitch line.
Best option is Nikwax products, also horse rug cleaners can reproof them, but dont let them wash them as they can shrink. Good luck  :003:

Are you sure the fabric needs reproofing?

I know I have a problem with condensation on the fabric roof, which freezes overnight and thaws out drop by drop onto me!

I use Renovo Ultra Proofer on my black 2002 TJ soft top, it restores the colour and makes the water bead and run off as it did when I brought it.  I get it from www.frost.co.uk but you can get it at other places. You need a dry day as it needs to dryout before it's water proof.

sounds interesting

has anyone used the Bestop product ?

To be honest my new halftop leaks like a dastard, have spoke to them and they dont want to know. They say it is only water resistant and in extreme climates will leak

I find my half top drops condensation on me, but does not leak.

The water in the footwells comes from the rain getting in where the top velcros around the roll cage.  Some heavy duty gaffer tape has reduced that.

After much trawlin turned out the fleabay US was the best bet:

I bought double as the soft top is old but also hopefully so I can save some money in the future
