GEARBOX/CLUTCH
« on: January 25, 2010, 07:54:54 PM »

lost the clutch on my 2.5td 1998 cherokee, clutch will not release.we thought it was the clutch slave cyclinder ar the old one had leak,we have replaced it for a better unit, bleed the system but still no clutch, will not take any gears at all.

while under the car i noticed about four bearings laying in the gap at the botton of the bell housing, could this be the clutch release bearing thats chucked it,the clutch was re done by local clutch centre where they installed a clutch kit about 3 months ago.

we know think the hydrolics are fine on the clutch but there is a lack of pressure on the pedal, like i said the system bleed though ok with fluid coming it the slave bleed hole(its at the top) at pressure,so no air in there.

any pointers on this would be of great help,as returning it to the clutch center would leave the door open to being ripped off i think.....

I would say the release bearing has died, if they fitted it 3 months ago I would be ringing them and getting it replaced for zilch as  the parts should carry a 12 month manufacturing guarantee.

sounds like the release/thrust bearing has disintergrated. i'd guess that the clutch fit crew only changed the relevant clutch bits and used the old origional. Did you supply the clutch or did they ?

thank you ,thank you thank you,but it seems we today have clutch.

looks like air in the system,we left it overnight and went out this morning to give it another bleed, this time it was much better and now we have clutch release,we think we still have some air in there as the clutch is still not pushing back like it did before with loads of pressure pushing the pedal back to the top,.

by the way,we used compression 8mm OD hydraulic fittings,as we could not get a pipe anywhere so we just cut it,this has worked a treat for joining the clutch hydraulic pipe, real easy to fit and saved a load of hassle changing the pipe out, although pumping the clutch up broke the little retaining clip on the clutch pedal to the master arm,new one ordered from jeep for £2.85 i think it was.,,,will pop under her on sunday and bleed more air out,but for now we are real happy.

clutch hydraulics=nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!,,,will have to get a second car i think.

next jobs=====new rear springs, change exhaust(maybe side exit type),fit newer better bull bar, change control arm bushes for poly type, oil and filter change, valet car, under seal whole car before next winter, that should keep me busy.

sure have, my release bearing failed and dropped its balls as you describe

they are a poor design as you cannot grease them and you end up changing the whole clutch because of the stupid thing

still think you have a problem mate  :icon_sad:

Release bearings are £50 and postage.

I know I had to buy one, then ended up breaking the car after a few months :icon_rolleyes: - so got one in the garage with little use :icon_winkle:

If it makes a grating noise then STOP - it took me about 5 miles before the bearing ground the clutch to bits :icon_rolleyes:

clutch has chucked it after only 17 months, sounds like the bearing has chucked it,manages to get it donw to clutch centre today,by the time we got there we had clutch again, but on the way down we just had to nudge through the gears, could not get any gears yesterday at all, waiting for call from clutch man, thay replaced the full kit and bearing and she is still under warrenty.....but we are shitting right now,,,,its got to be the clutch unit,,,hydrolics are fine loads of pressure.,,,,clutch was noisey just before it failed.

you never know what these dastards are going to try and pull, open to be ripped off.

warrenty 20k or 2 years,,,,they were less than happy to see me.

will let you all know how this goes but dont think i will have car back this week

still not heard anything from clutch man,but mechs have told me there is only one way to do this and that change the whole clutch and the bearing, thats the right way to do it as if you dont it can come back and bite you in the arse, reciept is for a clutch kit,i would take it this would include the bearing surely, recovery man that got me off the street knew the firm that did the clutch and siad they would not do things by halfs, maybe but there is always temptation for a fitter to cut corners, eitther way he said the bearing should have been changed out regardless, but did they grease it up i wonder.

will call them tommorow and talk to the orgin grinder not he monkeys

got tha car back today, turned out it was the bearing that supports the flywheel, cant remember the correct name, but this was falling apart and bearing getting down into the clutch jamming it up.

oh its called a spigot bearing, thats it!!!!

£290.00 ooch!!!!,fitters stated they never want to see the car again, arse of a job they said!

Eer needles!!!!!

the bearing that were laying inside the bell house gap at the botton were ball bearing type, not needles, needles would have fallen right out,do i smell a rat here!!!!!!

more info needed regarding this, wonder if they changed out the thrust bearing and charged me for a spigot bearing to cover there costs,,,,,might be getting my boxing gloves on.

It sounds exactly like that.

The release bearing is balls - the spigot is a lot smaller - sure it was rollers - but got me thinking now - if not then very small
