Hi everyone,

My 98 ZJ has developed an odd problem which I need to get sorted. When braking and stopping at a junction. When I release the brakes the rear of the jeep drops... I don't feel the rear raise when braking or anything so what could be causing this? I've checked that the shocks haven't broke free or anything and they haven't although they are old.

I don't know if it's connected but when driving around on the road there is also sometimes a metallic clank which seems to come from the driver rear behind the back seat... as if it's over the shock mounting.

In the last year or so i've replaced the double u joint on the front shaft and the rear upper and lower suspension arms and bushes.

Thanks

how good are the brakes?(stop okay, any locking etc) sounds like you had too much rear bias on the brakes.

Brakes are fine. There has't been any adjustment to them to give them more bias than normal. The fronts had new calipers, discs and pads about a year ago.

does it happen all the time? How about stopping the jeep on the handbrake, any odd noises? I had a similar thing with one of my XJs with a sticking rear shoe, I know the ZJ is a pad & shoe rear end, wonder if the handbrake is causing you issues

I'd have a look at the rear axle, sounds like you could have some movement there. At a guess I would say your rear bushes on the control arms are gone. I need to change mine as I have a similar problem but it is more noticeable when in reverse.

Chock the front wheels and raise a rear wheel and look for any sideways movement, then do the same for the other side. It might only be one thats gone. I found mine when I was changing wheels over and on tightening up the wheel nuts I noticed some movement, got underneath and found my rear lower bushing had a bit of play.
