Grand Cherokee oversized tyres
« on: February 07, 2010, 07:44:22 PM »

Hi all,

Just joined BD, and alredy learnt quite a bit about Jeeps reading through your posts. Great forum!

I have just bought a 98 Grand Cherokee 4.0 petrol. What a great machine! I will use it mostly on the road as a run around car but fancy taking it off road now and then. The tyres are shot and was wondering what I should fit to gain a bit of ground clearance. Currently running standard 225/70/16.

How big can I go? With stock suspension ;)

Will 225/75/16 be OK? No rubbing inside the arches and on full lock?

Thanks all for your help :)

235 75 R 15...

think that should be 235 75 r16 as he has 16 rims already. that seems a fairly large tyre to me though, coming in at 31.7 inch true size but not an GC expert!

30" dia wheels would be the limit if you want to retain flexibility with stock suspension, especially if you fit quick disconnects on the front.

235-70-16 is the size you want, .5" bigger diameter so no rubbing issues & standard fitment on loads of 4x4s so lots of choice at cheap prices

My GC has 16 inch standard and I would prefer leave that as is.

Do you reckon that 225/75/16 will work well then?

There are some Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA 104T that are tempting me on Ebay! Any good?

Thanks for your help guys ;)

scrw, thanks for your advice

I look at the different brands of tyres on camskill and feel... a little confused  :icon_rolleyes:

Bearing in mind that I am going to do 90% road and would like a tyre that does not make too much noise for these journeys, what should I go for?

Thanks  :icon_winkle:

NO. I am not having tyres with white markings on the side. Don't ask  :icon_rolleyes:

The chepest the better, but it needs to do a good job on the road and off it.

What is your problem with the Goodyear AT / SA scrw?

If you don't like the white writing, mount them the other way round; as I don't think they're directional (BFGs certainly aren't).

Goodyear SA's are hard as nails, not open enough to be called an AT, clog up very easily, and on a wet road are bloody scarey  :icon_eek:

When I bought my stock 16" rims they had 245/70r16 beofre I got new ones on them if that is any help. If you can get to JCS tyres in Notts he has a lot of sizes in so you could try a few for the best fit. I have General AT2's they are quiet on the road & ok in the mud.
What do you dislike about white lettering?

just a piece of trivia, white letting on tyres are referred to as owl's and yes its even marked on the  tyre.

owl= outlined white lettering.  :sleepy: :sleepy:
