YJ longer wheel base
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:11:54 PM »

Been wanting to do this for years... see here. http://bluetorchfab.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=84&products_id=115

But now I can weld?! :icon_twisted: :icon_super:

Tomorrow I'm off to the metal stockholders to get the bits (all 6mm)

Also been having a think about the front.... got no pics but maybe the following......

Square section to replace the standard C section YJ bumper, braced and welded to chassis should allow a shackle reversal and axle move forward of 3 inches coupled with 6 inch rear move should mean 102 inch wheelbase.

Staying with my 4.5" RE springs for a while but might go SOA (Wrangler rear springs) on front to see what its like........ (Nice Orange CJ on JP this months cover SOA on front and Spring under on rear. Unusual but stops axle wrap.....)

Anyone else done this any ideas warnings advice......

Just scored a High Lift off E-blag for £20 :icon_super: Wot me cheap?

Got mixed feelings about that one.
The engineering is sound and it's still on LEAF SPRINGS which I like :greggmo:
What sorta axle articulation are we lookin at compared to a std YJ with a 4" lift?
If you go front shackle reversal with long travel leaf springs, you're gonna need a LONG sliding spline on ya front prop :017:

Sorry to say I aint keen on jeeps mutilated beyond recognition as jeeps, I rather see summat scratch built

Gonna keep it Spring Under if pos.  on the 4.5 REs that I have and on 35s. So comp cut rear is out cos thats fugly. Gonna be 102"  as of todays  measuring.
The JP front cover CJ this month is stretched to 100 and runs 38s without comp cut so should be OK.
I know what you mean toooo much cutting and its just a mess.
Also got to be street legal.... hats off to the trailer brigade but not my bag ................ YET

It's not a comfort thing - you just need to know your going home one way or the other.

Probs!!!!

That's putting it mildly after ripping two axles form under two TJ's...........Snapping this bending that I started to see a pattern and then the light.
In fact I recall my last UK trip ended in my front axle throwing a bearing on the M62 at 80MPH

That was a life before you eyes moment!!!

The trailer idea works for me :icon_super:

No need to compromise with the offroader, no need for it to be stable on tarmac or pass construction regs either.

Yup, been there, done that.....

My YJ has XJ rears, all home brewed. Have a look here to see how I did it.
My springs are still the 'correct' way round as I have never got round to getting a prop made, but otherwise its a dozen bolts and a set of handbrake cables away from happening. Flexes like a bastard too!!

Other mods I did were to the fuel tank for clearance. As I have a 2" body lift I cut 2" out of the fuel tank skid and welded it back together, lifting the tank 2" back up tight against the tub floor. I also beat the living crap out of the front of it with a FBH and oxy acetylene torch to create a concave bulge to clear the pumpkin, then heated the plastic tank and forced it in. Free, and works a treat.

My advice? Just do it :greggmo:

I would BF if I could find one..... Egyptian YJ8 that is.....

Remember you doing it now Tragic was when you was on Bucks Jeeps?
Making small fuel cell for in the back 20litres ish cos I'm a propane sniffer.....so don't need the tank.
and Milemarker going under floor in back with access panel  for useage.... but...... shit bugger and corruption I have spent 6 hrs cleaning and 'doing' new brakes which were down to rivets! And everything was well muddy and clagged up .... now its not........... and the left caliper sticks on..... did the cold hose trick which sometimes works but only temporary today.....so  popped the piston and cleaned like an obsessive........ and the bugger still sticks.....  I could get the repair kit but sometimes they work other times its better to pop for a new caliper. I've had successs and failure on an equal split on the repair kits
Damn was hoping to get jiggy with the torch :icon_twisted:
Needs an MOT next 2 weeks so wanted to get it thro before I start the hack and mayhem :icon_super:
