Its the Jeep that gets re-programmed, the fob stays the same.

I wondered about that,  my ZJ fobs came of ebay second hand, and I had those re-programed for the ZJ :-k

also depends on what type of fob/system is in it  :?

If the fobs for the ZJ are the same as the one for the new motor you should be able to get it done at the stealers, if it's different then no.
If you haven't got one with the XJ ask one of the other Birtys with a pre 97 if your ZJ ones are the same as theirs.

Nice one Chris, SO have any of you lot got a 96 or earlier with a key fob? If so on the back of the fob there should be a part number! So if anyone has one do me a favor and tell me what the part number is, and I can compare it to the 2 ZJ one I have.
 Cheers fellas :smt023
