Serpentine belt pulley 97 XJ 4.0
« on: March 20, 2010, 06:52:36 PM »

Life with the cherokee is never dull.. having sorted out the dodgy brakes I've lurched right into the next crisis.

The plastic idler pully next to the alternator has disintegrated. The bearing in the centre has collapsed and now only the belt tension is holding the pulley square. I'll get another pulley from the scrappers next week but I have a couple of questions for you knowledgable types! What size is the bolt head that holds the pulley on? Also, is an all metal replacement available? and lastly, does anybody have a diagram of how the belt is routed? I've googled it and come up with all different variations and none of them right!

Never a dull moment.

There should be a diagram on a sticker on the slam panel or fan cowl.

Thanks Mike, I'll have a look tomorrow in the daylight. If the sticker's still there, I'm sure it's buried under a layer of mud and dust!

15mm, & I never found a steel replacement, only plastic, they are about £20 new.

Before I head off to the scrppers in search of a new pulley.. can anybody tell me if the pulleys are the same on all 4 litrre engines? Some are described as high output and some not. Are pre and post facelift models the same? Could I get one from a grand cherokee? The serpentine belt is ridged on my XJ, but the replacement (metal) roller I found online isn't, despite it being described as a facelift cherokee idler pulley.

My brain hurts  :lol_hitting:

If I were you I wouldn't really bother with a secondhand part unless it was from a Jeep I was breaking anyway so wasn't costing anything. I replaced the same part on mine last summer and went through the same search as you with ebay etc. The correct part is not listed on ebay and the usual suspects couldn't actually supply it even when given a part number. Lighthouse Jeep could order one in but it was dearer than going straight to Jeep. I paid £27 over the counter from Jeep and looking at the invoice it looks as though that includes a 10% discount. The part number is 53010228AB and it should be the same for your 1997 model as it is for my 2000yr Cherokee but Jeep will check and confirm that anyway.

There is a metal one listed on ebay that looks almost right, it has the sidewalls but not the centre ribs. I think it is meant for the diesel models.

I had a look and couldn't see any diagram.. probably washed away during a recent dunking! If you could post a pic, that'd be great. I've got a haynes manual, but it's for the pre-face lift models and seems to think the alternator is located at the bottom left, but mine's at the top. Maybe a trip to the main stealer is needed.

Have ordered a new pulley from main stealer at £37.. I'm hoping this comes with the bolt, bearing spacer etc. It wasn't clear from the exploded diagram whether the part is a complete unit or if it's just the plastic pulley.

Just in case anybody else out there has a grumbling bearing, the bearing itself is a 6203 (17x40x12mm) which can be bought anywhere for a couple of quid. I'm only replacing the whole unit because the plastic pulley is all chewed up.

Here's the belt routing for a 97 XJ 4.0 RHD. If you don't have AC there is just an idler there instead. Bolts are all normally seperate, and are usually pretty obvious in the parts list as they are numbered. If parts are grouped they are usually boxed and the box has it's own number even if the parts in the box also have numbers. Get a copy of the parts list from http://www.berrysprinter.com/jeepparts.php

That parts listing is a great website! Thanks for posting it. I should get the new pulley before the weekend, so will let y'all know how it goes.

Got a new pulley from MTB in Chester, ten minutes of spannering and it's all sorted. It sure sounds a lot healthier now!
