I contemplated doing this to my Dana 35 rear axle at one point and even went as far as buying the plates and LSD additive, but before I got around to it I replaced the axle with something stronger. I reckon it can be done without removing the carrier from the axle housing with just the axle shafts pulled, but I could be wrong.
Some good pointers here-
www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/traclok.html
And although it is not the same axle/lsd unit the principals are similar here-
www.angelfire.com/oh5/cpa5oh/cpa5ohtech018.htm
The clutch plates are put under pressure by a domed spring washer on each side, I believe these pressure washers/plates are called belleville washers or something similar. Usefull info about removing the half-shafts here -

just to be evil it is my opinion that the standard lsd aint worth spending cash on if you are int offroding fit a lunch box locker for cussedness and low cost and if you do a lot of road but still offroad and and have a bit of cash go true trac

do you think i would be better off leaving the rear diff alone for now and fitting type of locker in the front?
would this be ok for road use in 2wd
