HELP ME please....again lol
« on: April 15, 2010, 11:39:02 AM »

Hi Guys,

Hope you're all well.

Ok the Jeep won't start this morning and I refuse to call out the breakdown service because that's what seemed to cause some of the problems with the ESU before (some of you may remember  :jpshakehead:)  I can't bear for it to go that way again so I'm in need of advice for the best way to go about this.

As I don't drive the jeep for long periods and not too often, Do I get a trickle charger to leave on the jeep?  If so which one?

I have an optimate III that I leave on my Motorbike but will this be sufficient to trickle charge the jeep for a couple of hours to get going?

Any advice is gratefully received

cheers all x

in what manner wont the jeep start ?

does the engine turn over ?

does turning the ignition key make the engine turn over or not ?

the optimate should be fine for the battery as it will only charge when required

I would give it  as long as you can before you try to start it , then when it does start take it for a 15-20 min drive.

I think the trickle charger may take at least couple of hours to get enough back into the battery to get it to fire as it will only 'trickle' slowly into the battery, depends on how long it has been left for without running though, you should know how low the battery is by how many bars light up on the optimate if its anything like the one on I use on my bikes, the less light bars the longer to charge back to useable! if its real low you may be looking at more like 24 hours before it'll hold enough charge!

And the moral of this story is..... drive your jeep more cos a bike is easier to push?

I bought one of these chargers - www.tayna.co.uk/Numax-Leisure-Battery-Charger-10A-P6127.html

I can't remember where I got it from but I just googled it and turned up a seller that was doing it for about £50 delivered. It has a 10A full-on charging rate which is preety good then drops to a trickle/maintenance charge once at 100%.

A few things for you to consider about your Jeep not starting if it was due to a flat battery.

Is your battery at the end of it's life? An old battery can have quite a small charge reserve even though it behaves reasonably well for starting. I have one like this on my family car vauxhall astra. It's the original item from 2001 and does ok but if I park up and listen to the radio for a while (15-20mins) it is a bit of a gamble as to whether it will start. It's been like this for 2-3 years but refuses to die so I just take care not to run anything when the engine isn't running and keep waiting for it to finally die once and for all. can be parked up for weeks and will still start though? :017:

How do you use your jeep? It's common advice but lots of short trips might not give the battery a chance to recharge and once the battery starts to get low it gets even worse because lead acid batteries suffer badly when only partially charged for any length of time (I think technically it is called sulphation? Basically a deterioration of the batteries internal lead plates). Normal batteries also don't like to be drained and recharged many times (cycled) so if you have a habit of running the battery down by using accessories without the engine running it might be worth getting a leisure type battery as these are happier to be deep cycled.

Is there a problem that is draining your battery? Most vehicles draw some current when parked but this should only be a minute amount. My Cherokee seems to be fairly typical and draws around 10-20mA when parked (0.01-0.02A) and this would take weeks or months to drain an otherwise healthy battery enough to cause problems.

So to re-cap, you might be ready for a new battery or suffering from an electrical fault that is draining the battery. If the battery is healthy then your usage might be the cause so you might consider a top up charge every week or 2 or if garaged you could even plug it in every night if you have a charger that is capable of a trickle charge.

I hope this helps.

You need to give the battery a proper overnight charge or you will keep getting the problem.

The doc speaks wise words, if its convenient (i.e in a garage) leave it plugged into the Optimate till your new one turns up, Like you, I use an optimate on my sadly underused CBR, has kept the original battery going for over 10 years  :icon_winkle:

Optimates are good for Jeeps too; I have used my on all my cars & for the underused ones I hard wired in the battery terminal/loom section so you just have to plug the connector in.
For additional battery connectors don't buy the optimate £5.99 branded ones from the bike shops; you can get the same in Maplin for a about a quid.

While you adolescent school boys take a cold shower and calm down I thought I would try to dig out the supplier of my discounted charger.

I remember being very suspicious of some wide spread price fixing when I was looking to buy the 10A Numax charger as everyone was selling at a price within a few pennies of each other. I stumbled across a seller that was significantly less than the others but I can't find my receipt now, I know it was something to do with caravans and I think this is them - http://yorkshirecaravanmovers.co.uk/OtherProducts.html#BatteryCharger Although the price may have crept up a little in the last 12-18 months they are still about £15 cheaper. I was worried that I was being taken in or sold the wrong model at the time as it was almost too cheap to be true but was happy when it arrived ok.

I assume you have had a look at Wendy's web-site? http://www.wendysofwarwick.co.uk/salon.html

Hmmmm.... I wonder if I am going anywhere near Warwick anytime soon? I am sure I can think of something that could be waxed.................

She will do your undercarriage and she claims to get into all the crevices, nooks and crannies.

Damn, why did I allow myself to be drawn into this, sorry wendy.
