8274 help please
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:20:32 PM »

Right then the 8274 that I have had for 18months was working fine... on the floor connected to a battery with the ratty cables that came with it.....
Its lived in the workshop for that period of time and not got wet or anything...
I've just treated it to a monster set of cables 44mm square type so at least 3mm in diameter fatter than starter cable.
And I 've crimped on some terminals with a proper crimping tool.....
I've also given it a nice earth lead in addition.
I've got new battery terminals with 10mm posts for bolting leads on to....
The battery is new and starts the Jeep well and rear winch is working well!
Front 8274 has 4 solenoids so its the older version and they click when asked to by the hand control and when jumped with jumper wire. 2 of them are new.
I've tried with just winch connected to battery and then with everything connected and engine at 2000rpm and alternator says all is fine but motor on winch will not fire up. have no cable on at the moment and have tried to help it with free wheel and then re-engage, but no dice....
Any ideas guys. The battery is a regular parts store battery and started the winch fine in the past probably 750cca.

OK then - it's possible judging on how bright (dim) the bulb is - you could follow the feed, logically you could also reverse this to follow the earth also....I understand this is a bit Heath Robinson but it I believe it's a start.

Have a look at the connector bars that link all the solenoids together. I had a similar problem with mine ie they clicked but nowt happened. Turned out to be corrosion behind the connector bars. Cleaned them up and now all works fine.

Bubba had a similar problem with his winch last year at cheapfest or turkey hunt. lots of clicking but no power to the winch. Can't remember if it was a contact in the winch itself

Thank god for Birty's would be a lonely old world without a place to share a prob....

IOM have done the lightbulb trick on all the solenoids from the main power in and all blindddd me so if that means anything current is a comin'

I'll now go and check what Lornaben suggested. the joining bars...... (all of a sudden hydraulic doesn't seem so bad...)

thanks so far.....

Chased the earth and integrity of my new cables and they're  fine at the battery end  and fine and just as bright at the winch with  a good earth equally as bright from the auxillary earth strap I've given it. So power in and out along the cables.

Had this with soemones winch before

Ok on battery charger but not enough power from battery

Was crap in the motor itself so brushes could not engage (full of mud)

Took it to pieces jet washed all parts dried and covered in wd put back together again and fine

OK- so it would appear the motor is at fault - logically you have checked/ruled out the power source - mmm are you confident enough to remove the motor from the winch and look into the internals?

its earth try using a single jump lead from the negative on the battery then try earthing the body of the winch in differing places and try to operate the motor at the same time

Right done the earthing trick and no result..... Earthed it all over the place on the motor ... winchmount/ chassis...... on the earth bolthole where the earth/neg lead runs to... the aux earth lead that I hooked up . All pucker new cable..... Battery still fine and charging at 12-14 or whatever as usual and still starting like a goodun......

Thanks for help so far any more ideas?? :banghead:

Time for a direct feed to isolate the motor.

Using jumpleads, attach the lead direct to the negative on the battery and the other end to the winch body or negative post on the winch motor (not sure what's on yours). Attach the positive to one of the positive posts running into the winch motor. Attach the other end to the battery positive and the motor should run. If it doesn't then obviously the motor has a problem. If it does then its the wiring to it that's FUBAR in some way.

Stand by your beds............

and thanks Lornaben......

Whilst I was tearing my hair out I googled and came upon Stu's off road ....again.

His advice was to remove the 3 solenoid connections to the motor.....

Disconnect the pos to batt and leave neg.....

Jump from A to F1 and power from batt to F2 and motor runs one way.
Jump from A to F2 and power from batt to F1 and motor runs other way

And............... it worked

Reconnect and it didn't and then it did and then it didn't and then I put my hand on F2 and it worked...... so the message to self is tighten your nuts wildwood      (strangely I'de never loosened these??)

So in conclusion thanks for all your help and lets see how long and ordinary battery last and how long before I fry this vintage motor  :icon_twisted::icon_twisted:
