Nobbily tyres and Bull bars.
« on: April 29, 2010, 12:45:38 PM »

Hi folks.

Im new to this off roading malarkie and im looking for a bit of help.

Im currently running a 06 plate cherokee CRD. its due a service and some new tyres soon and i was thinking about getting rid of the road tyres, and putting on a set suitably for moderate off roading.

Ive been searching the forum and there seems to be a lot of info, but TBH, im a bit confused.

What I would like to know is -

1. Are there any direct replacement tyres that will go straight on my 17 inch standard rims, preferably a little bit bigger (without scrubbing the arches of course) that have a nice chunky off road style and are good in the mud? Ive heard those 'general grabber AT's' are good but cant find them in the right size (I have 235/65/17 road tyres on at the moment)

2. Ive noticed that there isnt a huge deal of ground clearance under the cherokee and the underside seems quite vunerable (the oil filter especially) and i was wondering about fitting some protection.

Can anyone reccomend a supplier that sells sump guards/front bull/'A' bars for the cherokee and would anyone reccomend a
certain product? also, are they hard to fit - is it a DIY job?

Thanks in advance,

Lew.

Ive noticed KJ oil filters do hang low...Try LOST Cherokees for advice or our very own Ivan might have a view

It is now illegal to sell new bull bars in the EU so most mainstream suppliers won't help. Go underground and try Ebay.

Now you have a Jeep, you need to get used to ordering parts from the US (unless you like getting
ripped off, that is). Start with ebay.com and see if they'l ship to the UK. Also, when you're searching
with google, make sure you use 'liberty' and not 'cherokee' or you'll be looking at the wrong vehicle.
(2002 onwards cherokees are called liberty here). If you find something you like, check with the
supplier that it will fit a 2.8CRD. As luck would have it, the 2.8CRD was sold here for a couple of
years. "liberty skid plate" would be a good search to use with google.com (not google.co.uk). You may
need to change your search settings to force it to use the USA site.

As Mike says, metal bull bars are a no-no in the EU, and yours is too new to say it was fitted before
the (retrospective) law came in. There are some approved A-bars here.

While underside protection is sensible, never saw the attraction of bull bars. They're dangerous
and you can save time, money and possibly getting pulled over by plod, by looking where you're
driving. If you think something looks like it might do damage, then a) don't do it, or b) get out and
look first.

Dont understand your logic there BF
Why would he want the noise and vibrations of mudterrains when he says he wants to do moderate off roading :017:

My opinion is buy some all terrains the reason being they will be more economical, last longer, not do your head in at 70mph and give you some grip in rain, ice and snow and you might even get to keep a reasonable stopping distance.

I'm right with you on this Mr Sparky. This week has just seen me fit a set of AT2's because for all my road driving and 75-80% of my off-road driving they will be perfectly adequate and for the other times I have a set of Insa special tracks all 235/85/16s on 2 sets of Grand Cherokee rims. I got fed up with the BFG MT rumble (present at speeds from 30-40mph, you just don't realise it until it is suddenly gone) which also seems to be getting worse as the tyres wear. Perhaps now my 4ltr auto fuel consumption will improve fractionally?

Don't get me wrong, the BFG MT is a jolly good tyre and has served me very well, has worn from 15mm to 11mm in 12k and got me through lots of quite extreme stuff but most people will be better served by a set of AT type tyres, especially on daily driver vehicles.

Hi

www.lostkjs.com and www.jeepkj.com are 2 good sources of info.

I bought an aluminium gear/transfer skid plate for mine, since I wanted some lightweight protection for the odd time I might take mine off tarmac.  Have a look here http://www.offroad24.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d289.html

I think I paid £200.  I had to drill an extra hole since I think it was designed for a 2004 model.
