so, buggered my engine driven fan again takeing the water pump with it while wadeing again so decided something had to be done! not had any luck with electric fans in the past, not enough cooling when jeep is working hard, use to much electric and the motors give up eventually from water ingress spoiling your day.
so i bought one of these

its a wj grand cherry hydro fan. works off the powersteering pump, has an electric valve to switch it on/off and moves a shit load of air! its also massive, 20.5 inch fan so massive rad coverage, also 5 inch thick so needed to move the rad forward for clearance.
moving the rad forward ment loseing the headlights, might replace with either spots or flat fitting headlights.
this is my much butchered grill with the rad moved forward inside the grill

mounting the fan was actually fairly straight forward, cut some of the cowl off mostly the top lip and clearance the water in out ports for the rad, drill through the lovely 4 mounting holes through the rad bracket and bolt it to the rad.

still say your a fruitcake for trying to hide the problem instead of fixing it.
your killings the fan itself not just the motor. how hard is it gonna be to change just the fan in a month when theres not more fins on it?

so what's the fan rated at compared to the std. Novel idea using the pas pump never seen that idea on other cars. curious to see how long it will last after being subnerged a few times

been there done that, jj it can be turned off in water so no spinny spinny ( well aparently a little spinny spinny but not much).
hydo should be fine submerged, hydro winches work underwater.

i am assuming this is for the monster cj. as bubba suggests cant you relocate the radiator to the rear in a similar fashion to the specialised off road racers

beds already quite full, got the lpg tank there as well as rear winch.tryed it in the back before and the pump didnt like it, wouldnt pump water that far well enough, rad would be cold engine hot untill you went down hill then rad would shower you with boiling water! it also ruined rear visability.

Be interested to know if its has some sort of valve to control its speed or does it just get faster as the engine revs due to increased flow from the pump?.

Bets on now that the next job will be a cooler for the power steering pump due to the extra work load thats just been put on it? :icon_biggrin:

The hydraulic motor on/off and speed control is achieved by the powertrain control module modulating the voltage to the hydraulic solenoid valve. Yes, they do have a cooler. I have one off a WG on my XJ to stop the PAS getting too hot when lurking in the woods. :003:

on the wj its all fancy, cotrolled by ecu, it tells it how fast to spin due to water temp, trans temp, air con etc. mine will be on or off lol.
im full hydro steer front and rear so have a large oil tank and a cooler anyway

anyone used the thermal fans with the built in temperature sensor and measures the matrix temp rather than a sensor in the coolant line.

Here's  :headhack: an idea for someone...... Did this a few years ago......

If ya running no fenderwells you got space for rads at right angles to the normal position..... ie either side of the engine.   Up to you what size you use mini rads (tooooo small) I used one Transit van rad bought new £55 and a Pacet leccy fan....... bugger stayed soooo cool.

cooling is all down to the volume of water in the rad at any one time. if you have cooling trouble the best way to sort it is a thicker higher flow core in the rad but it will need to be custome made. i have a three row in spongebob and this allows me to loose upto 50% of the air flow and it still wont cook. the only problem is that on road at road speeds it almost over cools and needs a cover in the winter. i do like the look of that hydro job though john and i cant see that being bothered by the mud n shit.

totally agree, rad i have is a 3 core all alli job from wizard cooling and its great! the buggered fan i took off had 2 blades missing and was still staying cool till the water pump bearing went and it started leaking in a big way. this is to hopefully take the stress of the bearing aswell so it dont bugger the bearing

was going to suggest dump the mechanical pump and fit an electric version but given the cost it would be cheaper just repairing the standard pump
