I have just taken my 2.5 diesal Cherokee on a long trip from the west of Poland to the Ukrainian city of Kiev , and the old oiler ran perfectly apart from one problem which i hope you are all going to tell me is not serious...?

During the return journey the oil pressure guage which normally shows good pressure would sometimes drop to zero for a moment , then return to normal , when this happened the engine check light would light up , then go out as the pressure returned to normal.....

Sometimes the guage would go above normal , again , it was only for a second or two , and again the check engine light would light up briefly...

Is this a pressure guage playing up , an oil pressure switch , or something more serious...????   The engine seems to be running fine otherwise....

Not sure exactly with a jeep, but i would assume if it was just the guage itself, then it wouldnt register a fault to cause the engine light to come on whereas a faulty switch or sensor would be enough to cause it to register a fault reading.Could be totally wrong but just my opinion and not a fact

it could be as simple as the pressure switch, i would replace it and go from there.

Hi if its a face lift the oil pressure switch is not very accessible and is above the starter motor, if it was easy it wouldn't go wrong, I have had a switch for 6 weeks now but not got round to fitting it. My 2.5td does this as well sometimes all the guages go off  including the speedo and rev counter, the first bump in the road or a restart cures this, so I think it may be the connections at the back of the instrument cluster or something of that nature.

good luck greg

seems that the check engine light only comes on when the pressure sensor fails and sees no pressure or over pressure

one check is to unplug the sensor and see if the check engine light is illuminated. It should go out when re-connected.

Thanks guys....i shall poke the connections and assorted bits and see what happens....   Whatever it is , its not something thats going to cause the engine to go bang , so might just have to live with it if i can,t fix it without struggling to get to the pressure switch....

I guesss one thousand miles on Ukrainian roads may have shaken something loose....??

you know you have oil in the engine
you have already done some silly miles
the pressure gauge has gone faulty
the engine hasn't gone bang

don't worry too much these pressure gauges do fail sooner than any other make

My voltmeter does the same thing, throwing the check guages light. An electrical issue somewhere I guess.
