Diesel engine for a wrangler
«

Hi,
I am new to the forum and the world of Jeeps. Looking at getting a Jeep Wrangler 4.0 manual.
My intention is to keep it for many years. Is there anyone out there who has put a deisel engine in a Jeep?
If so what was the engine and what adapters were used to connect the gearbox. I am also considering the possibility of LPG.
I really would appreciate any advice
Thanks in anticipation

I can find you the number for a good psychiatrist if you want, its a Jeep, they run on petrol, the only mod you should make to the engine is to make it BIGGER

There was a weird gent called 'Diesel Cowboy' from the traveling fraternity who frequented Jeepfest in the early years up to about 2002 last time I saw him .....he had a red YJ LHD with a Transit engine....... never saw under the hood .... was more interested in flat fenders with 383s .... mmmmnnn
But there you go it can be done...... apparently......but why.....
if you want cheap get a Smart for the week and tear the arse out of the atmosphere with a V8 at the weekend

LPG is good for a petrol.
avoid the vm lump
cummins diesel is a common fitment for the usa owners 6bt variant
cummins diesel 6bt in a jeep wrangler turbo diesel
or cummins 4bt

I'd suggest LPG as well, I have it on my Wrangler, the 4.0 Jeep engine is excellent on and off road, wouldn't swap it... certainly not for farmers juice engine....
Maybe source second hand... look for entire Cherokee with it.... will also give you lots of other useful spares...
Good luck with your project, cheers Maf

I dunno, I quite like the idea of a T.L.C. straight 6 4.2 TD in a wrangler

I keep having thoughts about that engine and either yota or nissan patrol axles - not gonna happen in my XJ but the thought still pops in my head for a possible tow vehicle project

I was thinking more what I could do with BD's FSJ or J20 if he swapped either for a bacon sandwich and a couple of jaffa cakes.

In all seriousness
FSJ to me means big V8 power and big V8 sound.
Anything else under the hood is only half a full size jeep
That means to go diesel I'd have to find a big naturally aspirated V8 diesel (turbos mince up that lovely V8 exhaust note)
And there aint none.
Well there is, the GMC 5.7/6.2
They are dogs
Everything else is modern and has turbos on it

Arr. The new 6.4 powerstroke sounds very nice, though not as good as the old 7.3.
Neither the 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins will ever sound that great though, being I6.

Ah. quit poncing about and fit the Cummins 6CTA, more or less the same physical size as the 6BT but bored out to 8.3l versus 5.9
The trouble with the Cummins engines is that the distance from the crank centreline to the bottom of the sump is so great.
Dodge still fit them in some of their big trucks I think, so it can't be an insurmountable problem.

If i were you id ignore these petrol obsessed turkeys and fit whatever the hell you like to your Jeep theres enough room for whatever you want to install.
I have a Toyota diesel engine and box in my CJ which i installed much to everyones disgust, but it works a treat even with the standard axles and 33 inch tyres, you just have to put up with the piss taking off the "real" Jeepers, which of course you can because you have made something unique and which is also economical to run, dosent mind water and mud and if you fit an early enough engine isnt affected by any electrical issues.
Plus i would of thought the Cummins the Birtys seem to be obssesed with would destroy everything in the drive train, put the front end of your Jeep on the bump stops and cost a fortune for spares, personally id stick to something thats easily available, serviced and repaired if necessary.
Just because its a Jeep dosent mean it has to have a massive American engine, i may be wrong but i believe the factory diesel Cherokees and Grand Cherokees are Italian and German designed engines arent they? certainly not Cummins anyways. Rant over
