OK...... I've got hi steer cross over steering on the YJ and its been on for 2 years no prob apart from chassis to shackle bushes that were toast and gave me the death wobble and loose u-bolts that did the same ...... I don't run a steering damper.
I have given it stick up the motorway and around  the Bawtry site ...... Since end of March it has  been off the road doing the winch on back and 8274 up front trick..... Finished it 2 weeks ago and haven't road tested it cos it went ok before

So I thought I better check before trying to go to Kirton on Sat........

Bugger...... Death wobble on any rough country road........... only stopped by slowing and then not going going fast again.......

Came back did the idiot check....all bolts tight and also increased damping (never bothered with that before)    no bloody difference.......

I think I know what it is..... WEIGHT  It had a milemarker that sat back by the grill and wore its weight low down....

I now have the 8274 which sits 3 or 4 inches further forward and higher and weighs 40 or 50 lbs more ................

So  now I've got to strip the front change the knuckles and put original steering and HD steering damper back on, fingers crossed that will do the trick.

Making it to Kirton seems a bit of a maybe at the moment.......... Bugger

The weight's probably making it much worse but I'd guess there is still something loose, worn or not at the correct operating angle. I also have modified steering (WJ setup) and the time i had death wobble it was the ball joint at the knuckle end of the draglink - just a bit worn and I hadn't done it up quite tight enough.

Got Warn free wheeling hub kit on front and just tested the bearing wear...... zero.....

Fixed for the moment

This is what I did.......

Changed my hi steer knuckles and cross over steering threw it in the corner of the workshop.......

And fitted the original YJ steering with ball joints that are OK.... had lost the bolt that fits the steering damper to the axle and is shouldered so had to drill from underneath and fit long 8.8 grade bolt to afix damper (bugger of a time waste when you lose stuff ) But you could still feel the death wobble even tho it was being masked by the very strong pro crap heavy duty damper....

Went to Kirton had a great time and wobbled home.......


Ordered some shackle eye bushes from Lighthouse as the original rubber ones I fitted 2 years ago were ovaled..... could be this...... who
knows......

Also ordered some Daystar lubeable poly buhes like on my springs (had these on my last YJ and let them go with the vehicle )
they wont be here till 14th June so fitted the Lighthouse ones and cleaned everything up...........

Just been for a serious blast across crap gullied frost fecked fenland roads and ...... seems to be fixed............

So it could have been that..........

But in desperation I have been anoraking the interweb and seems folk stateside have had death wobble from out of balance tyres......miss matched tread depth  bent rims and miraculously problem went when they ponied up for new tyres.....(ouch)

Now... I have cleaned the mud out of my rims in recent months and swapped tyres around so I swapped em back....... this could also be the answer to my probs........ I'm done feckin' around now as it works......

Some or all or none of this might be of use to you leafers on Birtys........ It seems the 8274's weight was a bit of a red herring but could have just tipped the balance......

I've now got to think about a big feck off Pacet fan as a pusher to keep it cool on the motorway cos the 8274 blocks a lot of grill.... fine off road and fine at town speeds.......

The other thing that could be giving you wobble is a flexing tie rod, especially with the larger wheels.
Ive got a thicker one of a fourtrak, just need to get hold of a tapered reamer because the daihatsu track rod ends are a different angle to the jeep tre,s. im using a 16 inch leccy fan on mine, got it of eblag  £60 squids

This is what I did have for 2 years and no steering damper and no probs...... Guess I just took it one step too far.....

The TREs are dana 60 spec and the octagonal ally rods are monster thick and are meant to deform and return.....

Either true or snake oil..... I'm now unconvinced.......

The Hi-steer arm does not allow full steering lock in both directions...... 2" loss either way so turning tight off road was not good...
(This is all Terraflex stuff that I imported when the $$ was pants just shows the harder you try the more probs show up

I'm now working on keeping the TREs and getting steel tube threaded (like normal) that will give me some'at to weld to for the next stage "Hydro Assist"

If you know the size of the threads on the tre`s you could buy some thread inserts, or make them, weld them into a good heavy wall chromolly tube, that should sort it.

Arh... Inserts good thinking...... Can get these shipped over cheap I think...... Nice opportunity for some monster rosette (plug ) welding

What tyre sizes/lift are you running?
