Dat Dat Dat noise from the front.
« on: May 29, 2010, 04:33:57 PM »

Not been on here for a while because my XJ has been out of action for a year due to no job and mortgage comes first. Anyway back in work and now looking to get her back on the road.

Drove her round the block recently and she's developed a Dat Dat Dat Dat noise at the front when pulling away that increases with speed. First thoughts were hub bearings and/or axle shaft UJ's but there is no play in the bearings and I've had the axle shafts out and there is no play in the UJ's at all. Checked all the suspension and everything is nice and tight.

So has anybody got any ideas and any tests I can do to find out where this is comng from?

The UJ's are fine and no seizure at all. They are very smooth with no play. It's not a stone in the tyre, it's definately something is the drivetrain. It's just puzzling me!

it might be a flat spot in the tyre tread if the jeeps sat dead still for a while ( few months)

:imwitstupid: or rust patches on the brakes perhaps. Is it the same in 4wd and 2wd?

Front tyres/wheels have been off the Jeep for most of the time it has been idle. There were some rust patches on the brakes but they have now come off. Haven't tried it is 2WD (it normally stays in 4WD all the time), I'll give that a go tomorrow. What are you thinking Mike?

clean the discs up properly, it still sounds like rust build up.

Had that too. Rust builds up on the outside edge of the disk, and when left for a while blisters etc. So when you start using the vehicle again, the rust bubbles hit the caliper. Drives you nuts until you find it or it wears off!

I think I've found it. There is a small amount of play in the front propshaft where it exits the transfer case so presume the joint is worn. Now is this an easy job or a PITA?

Take it off and see if the noise goes away. If it does rebuild the double cardan joint. Fiddly but not too bad.

OK, I'm getting a bit more concerned now. Had a couple of hours spare over the weekend and took off the front propshaft, The double cardan joint seems good and solid BUT there is a small amount of play in the yolk coming out of the transfer case. I'm talking a really small amount but there is play there. I would have thought it should be solid.  :017:

Could be!  i fixed my mates it had a tapping noise like   a stone in the tyre, it was the t/c chain that had stretched and was  touching the case every revolution.  if you take out the drain plug you can see the chain use a screwdriver and try and move the chain up and down if it moves it's slack it should be fairly tight, it may tapp the case as you pull the driver out of the hole. if it's slack it needs a new chain.........
