High Fenders on YJ/TJ etc
« on: July 30, 2010, 03:09:14 PM »

Right then...... As I am going 1 ton axles and big..... (whatever I can afford tyres) but think 38.5 -40 I am going to do the 'Hi fender' trick....Already been done by 'double J' who sent me this thread from 'Pirate".

Looks to be easy....... Specially as the bloke at the bottom of the page (included) has shown where he cut his YJ fenders.....

So..... whaddya think.... Ugly as shite .... 'put down the bong and step away slowly from the keyboard!'....... or not......

I am doing it 'cos its free (ish) and then I can convert to tube fenders when I have more time and the 1 tons underneath........

Examples here http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=538391&page=2

I like the fact that if you take your time doing it, it still looks stock. Only where they should have put them in the first place. Tube fenders are great on all accounts, but they do not look stock. Stockish....... yes but still not quite there.

If you want the best example of what it should look like or what your shooting for AEV makes bolt on fenders and hood.

Yup AEV are the puppies to copy..... but as ya say for the cost of another TJ :jpshakehead:

Going to go that copycat route tho....

Only thing is with 1 tons I am going to be 4" wider each side than I am now  (7" fender flares on now!)

Looks like 'billy bob shade tree fenders' from conveyor belt for the extra then :icon_super:

if you are going trailer queen route then why does wider matter mate? and either way i might have a cleaner solution for us both, remind me when you come down to kingcjs, cause i might need help sweet talking him. :icon_super:

Sounds good.........

I'll also need to sweet talk King CJ outta some 8 lug rims he said he had!! MY 1 tons are coming with the DRW set up so will look stoopid under a Jeep

And Yup gonna be a trailer queen but want to get an MOT on it for some of the sites that only have Road Tax Vehicle stuff on site... That's the plan but then plans always change :icon_twisted:

Tyres are gonna be crippling even if I get 38.5s x 17x a skinny 11 (boggers) they will still be £350 or sommat like that each and then beadlocks or search for some 8 lug 16s or 16.5s that aren't commercial vehicle skinny.......

Weird thing is the 1 tons are FREE........... :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

Well not really .....they are a direct swap for the well spec'd 30 and 44 in mine (don't want to tally the build cost spread over 8 years but it would buy a nice TJ just on the axle spend)

But today got rained off outside working so decided to have a Jeep afternoon starting the Hi-Fender trick......... 2 and half hours in.. and one fender loose.. just gotta take off all the stuff bolted to it and do the biz..... a very long job then ....... (and then I dropped the disc cutter thro an ARB line).........dumb hippie :jpshakehead:

If anyone asks you to do it to their rig............... rub your hands and shake them warmly by the wallet :icon_twisted:

Yup reckon so.... Intravenous or if spelt wrong  'up the vein' .........the 'red bull' that is.............

Nice one piece hood and fenders  there.... sad we can't get them cheap...... Campbell enterprises and a load of others do em.

I'm gonna try to keep the front of the fenders as well so it will look as if they are trying to cover the bottom and sides of the headlights........ but may just get jiggy with the cutting disc in the end :icon_twisted:

Hows the 4 link going?

yes lots and lots of redbull is a must! but even then ive lost an entire weekend to lack of sleep and screw ups so think hard but always realize sometimes you just gotta dig in and start cutting.

OK 12 hrs in and both sides cobbled together.

Doing it is easy........... not :icon_twisted:

17 year old factory fitted bolts and rust... angle grinder fu... and just having to remove everything thats been put under the hood as an 'extra' over my ownership.....relays, horn, on board air, blah blah ....you get the picture.

It is easy .....just time consuming to do it well and make it look factory and patch up the bits that never fit .... breakin' out the metal glue tomorrow.... :icon_super:

No pics yet cos it just looks like a stipped unloved junker......... There is now room for a couple of 40s under the front .......... just have to deal with the rear now.  :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

Right then tis sorta done for the moment just to clean up a bit now......

Bugger...... over 30 hrs involved what with spraying inside and underneath with primer and satin black.... and welding front edges to the bits by the lights and making brackets for air compressor and horn and cutting inner fender for battery box clearance ..... and so the time just ...goes.
Here are some pics. of the above.
