Quadratrac Transfer case fluid.
« on: August 28, 2010, 11:03:04 PM »

Gentlemen, good evening.
We are going to attack the gearbox oil leak in  a couple of weeks time. While we do this we are going to change the transfer case fluid.I hear that the official fluid is called TCL1.Do Lighthouse stock this?
I have also heard that you can mix your own, using a straight non detergent SAE30 and an LSD additive. The LSD additive is my real question. I have seen the rear LSD friction modifier for sale readily, is this the same type that would be used to make the transfer case fluid or am I barking up the wrong tree? Or just barking?
Thanks in advance!

Fair comment.

a stealership should sell it, as they can be competative on prices for fluids. the Ltd slip addative costs the same as the ones sold on fleabay

yup lightys ebay too at times

i have always treated special fluids with extreme scorn and suspicion ......but over the years i have grown to feel that if you do use it you have peace of mind

that said i used to use jcb transmision fluid in mine years ago and never had a problem

Right, thanks for your input gents. I have to order some parts from Lighthouse on Tuesday anyway, so I'll get the TCL at the same time.It is a couple of weeks before my chap can do the gearbox seal, so I can go to plan B if Lighthouse draw a blank.

Thanks again all, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

He is a friend. He has a small workshop and has worked on 4x4s all his life.I use him for jobs that I dont have the tools for( 4 post lift, transmission jacks etc) I last used him for a bodylift fitment on a Navara that I had. I will probably help him given that he works alone. Any pitfalls I should be aware of? It all seems pretty straightforward apart from the weight of the box/transfer box and reduction box as a whole?

The quadratrac is a chain driven centre diff transfer case with a LSD added to the centre diff, and a vacuum powered  lock up.

That's all.

The morse type drive chain weren't a new invention either, and would have benefitted from a hydraulic tensioner TBH.

Nothing magical or special about it, just a new (in the 1970's) application of proven technology.

Mix your own lube and save a fortune, you'll find all the specs on the IFSJA.

all very true the only item of interest is the lsd  unit is a funny cone arrangement rather than a clutch pack with plates if you were using gallons i would agree with fj but unless you routinely have or use lots of different oils  that are free i would still buy it and if its for sale like i say peace of mind

Amazing thing to me is that despite the large amount of interest shown in these vehicles (IFSJA forum is VERY well supported, 100s of posts each day)

Nobody has managed to produce a replacement LSD or LSD overhaul kit for the quadratrac.

One "expert" stripped seven  transfer cases to find one LSD that was perfect.

Best they can offer is a (milemarker) part time conversion which to me is just plain dumb.
