Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 HO Knocking Noise
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:31:41 PM »

Hi Guys

I really need your help!

In April i was driving along the M3 and i started to hear a knocking sound, the sound increased as i accelerated so i pulled over and called the AA.

Well they couldn't work out what was wrong, so i took it to a local garage. After removing the rocker covers to check the cam followers hadn't slipped off they checked the timing chain tension and that appears OK..

The only solution they could come up with is the big end bearers are worn, which obviously means a new engine..

Has anyone got any other ideas what it could be??
Also if i need a new engine has anyone got an idea where i can get a 2nd engine or get my engine rebuilt?

I live in Hampshire but will transport the car to a good jeep specialist if anyone can recommend one.

Thanks in advance

get underneath and check torque converter bolts first. ( I am no expert but it was a cheap fix that sorted another member strange knocking noise)

The V8s do appear prone to premature and terminal failure. A used replacement will set you back about a grand (hence the name Grand Cherokee - everything on them costs that much to fix :003:) I can direct you to a nice man in Essex who may be able to sort it for you if you like. What's the oil pressure like?
