front O/S whinning
« on: September 04, 2010, 07:25:25 AM »

hi all
grand cherokee V8 4.7 1999
i bought my jeep with a known duff (offside UK)CV joint, bought one off ebay ( this is the cv joint
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JEEP-GRAND-CHEROKEE-CV-JOINT-BRAND-NEW-99-/140336031348?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM

fitted, n torqued up to 175 lb no problem but now there is a horrible whinning from the offside front end I can also feel it thru the floor.
ive checked and striped it all back down and refitted and all looks ok,
cant feel any play or grinding in the hub.

before i changed the CV there was no whinning just the tell tale clunking from the CV joint, thats now gone but the noise is now higher than the radio will go.
ordered another cv from a different dealer and fitted, still the whinning is there

have also fitted new hub and still the noise is there.
ive now removed the shaft and left cv in place and no noise
taken cover off diff and nuffin i can see wrong in there

cheers

cheers for reply

cant see that working as it stops when r/h shaft is removed
im going out now to strip down the l/h and see is its summit transfering over from that side.

at the moment i can feel it thru the floor on the r/h side so dont think its the prop at all
also have a look and see if i damaged anything at the seal end when i first did the cv, as there was no noise before
only the cv crunching.
goto be summit i did then, but ill check l/h anyway as there is a bit of a grumbling over there

Does it whine with power on, coasting or all the time?

:icon_eek: That's not a noise a CV joint would make.

well the update is

was underneath having a looksie around, grabbed the front prop and slap slap
more play than a saturday night footballer in a wine bar
looks like pinion bearing is fubared, sure there wasnt any play there when i checked last week,
so on the look out for another diff now.
hopefully that was what was causing all my grief.
