TJ New Rear Storage Build / Redesign
« on: September 25, 2010, 06:45:14 PM »

Well decided to redesign the inside back of the TJ, for storage purposes.  So here's some photo's and text for the build.

the first step was to strip out the back of the TJ ready for the start of the build, I also removed the speakers from the door pods I had previously made and the tweeters from the dashboard.

Now I could start fabricating the frame and front for the new storage area, the frame is 20x20x2 mild steel and the front is 18mm MDF.

Once the front frame was fitted and bolted down I fabricated the rear frame as it needs to narrow to come insde the roll bar and also pick up the roll bar fixing to secure it to to the floor of the TJ.

The next stage involved the fabrication of the main speaker pod, again using 18mm MDF.

Then I fabricated the frame for the lid and attached it using weld on hinges, the MDF has now been painted as well as the steel frame and the speakers are in position with the wiring and the crossovers

The first piece of tread plate was then put into position this is attached on high bond structural tape then riveted into place and then for good measure I bonded the frame to the under side of the tread plate as well, this should hopefully prevent rattles.

The lid is secured by two keyed alike locks that throw an 11mm diameter hardened bolt through the frames for 55mm

Next I fabricated two brackets to secure the Hi Lift Jack behind the rear seat.

The front of the box behind the seats contains the speakers that were previously in the door and always in the way.

These are fed from my iphone via the jack in the photo and a USB charger in the cigarette lighter to charge the phone, the volume knob is an audio grade stereo potentiometer that is wired to create a volume control between the line out of the iphone and line in on the poweramp the blue button turns on the power amp

This then runs into the poweramp that I have fitted under the passenger seat.

The final parts to tidy up were the holes in the dashboard were the tweeters used to be so I have inserted some LED lights that are tied into the courtesy light circuit and for the doors I have fabricated a cover panel and attached some net pockets for storage.

Just need to fabricate a lid stay to finish the box off.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers
Nick

Cheers, just need to get my ass into gear and get some of the 3.99 wilkinson containers to fit in it for organising stuff.  Originally had a van vault which will shortly get a new owner when I PM Bubba to see if I can drop it off for Bulldog to collect.

Cheers
