more steering issues
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:07:27 PM »

the steering box on lil yella is pissing PSF and feels like a bag of bolts so needs to come off and get serviced, problem is I need to keep it on the road as its my daily driver.

will a box from a LHD fit a RHD? was thinking of fitting tonkas box on to yella then do a rebuild and fit the reconed box on tonka, will that work?

From the leaking sponge of my brain comes the notion that I have seen or read in either JP mag or Pirate.....
that the XJ steering box is used on CJs and that the difference is 3 bolt fixing rather than 4 bolt as on YJ.

Hope that helps :icon_super:

Cherokee steering boxes fit straight onto the cjs bracket so presumably yjs,tjs etc are all the same but rhd and lhd are different handed.
It was a cherokee power steering box fitted to my standard bracket that snapped the casting at Tong!.

so in theory as long as the connecting shaft that goes from the column to the box is shortened/lengthened to fit, XJ steering will fit a CJ without the major components/joint being modified,

Shouldnt need any changes if you already have power steering (manual boxes are definitely different!)i think that externally the power steering boxes are exactly the same, the only difference there may be is a different spline count or input shaft size on the early cjs power steering boxes, i need to compare the scrambler box and a cherokee box and then i will be able to let you know if they do fit, give me 24hrs and i will have a definite answer for you.

The other way if you are feeling brave is to take the end of the steering box off where the input shaft is and then you will be able to swap it in for what you do have, all you need to do is undo the locknut and get a grinder key to undo the end but according to the manual you need a very low setting torque wrench to set it back up properly  :100:

Where is the fluid coming from? if its from the main shaft that the pitman attaches to you can buy rebuild kits for them i think ive seen them on ebay from those chrysler parts people roughly £30 to £40 i think was the cost may be cheaper and easier as a second hand box may leak too :icon_sad:
