Grand 4.7 overland 02-rear axle replacement
« on: September 26, 2010, 08:09:52 PM »

Hi

I've got very noisy rear axle.Looking for a garage  specialising in Jeeps from North West area. I'm from Ellesmere Port.
I was told in one garage that fixing it may cost from 650-1200 plus VAT.Is it reasonable price???

Faced with an estimate like that I would start looking for a reasonable used axle (plenty of these vehicles being broken on ebay normally) and then swap it myself. Expect to pay around £300 for an axle? Make sure you tell the seller you will be bringing it straight back if it is no better than your existing axle (but not before you agree a price!)

Swapping the axle is fairly straightforward if not a little physical, I've done dozens on Jeeps and Landrovers and even faffing about fettling brakes and anything else you find while your at it it is an easy 1 day project for a reasonable DIY'er with a break for lunch.

I was looking 4 one from e-bay.The trouble is that my one is with limited slip diff. The ones I found on e bay are mostly opened without LSD. I've no idea if I can fit that kind of axle to my one. Also I've got quadra drive in the car,and the axles I've looked at were mostly from quadra tracks II.Does it make any diffrence??

Quadradrive is the better system and will put the price of your repair up. It depends on how long you want to keep the car and other things but I'd recommend getting prices for a rebuild. I would have thought the lower end of the range you quoted is a sensible budget. It might even add that amount to the selling price of the car to show that it has been completely overhauled with new parts.

Get a parts price from Randy's Ring & Pinion in the USA & Lighthouse here in UK.

Then enquire about getting it rebuilt at MJS (V8 Bubba on here) perhaps  :icon_winkle:
