CHEROKEE DIESAL...power steering pipe leak
« on: October 01, 2010, 04:10:02 PM »

My 1997 mk 2 cherokee diesal has a severe leak on the metal pipe from the steering arm to the fluid reservoir...

The first part of the two pipes from the steering arm are metal , then further along they go into rubber pipes up towards the reservoir...

I have the leak on one of the two metal pipes near the steering arm , just a few inches from the arm...

What i would like to ask , is can i saw out the leaking section of metal pipe and replace it with hydraulic hose untill i can get a replacement metal pipe , and if so , does anyone know the internal size of such hose...?

I have seen some Cherokee steering hose advertised on ebay , and this is apparently 10mm internal diameter , does this sound right...?

I am out in the middle of the forest in Poland , so getting a replacement metal pipe could be tricky , but hydraulic hose is easy enough to get hold of...          thanks...

Treeman posted about the same time as me with the same problem it seems , and he cured his leak by sawing out the damaged pipe and replacing it with some petrol pipe , he mentioned that it was not a high pressure system...

Well , i gave it a go , i sawed out the leaky bit , put on some hydrauic hose , held with two jubilee clips each end  , topped up the fluid , and started her up...   All was fine , untill i turned the steering to get any air out of the system...the hose just blew to bits...!

It may not be a high pressure system , but its certainly higher pressure than the hose i put on it...  I read somewhere that these systems can be up to 80 bar pressure , or more.. It seems the hose i put on is only good for around 10 bar...

Does anyone know what pressure these power steering systems run at , so i can get some hose that will stand up to it...?     I have gone and cut the metal pipe now , so a hose is the only option out here...

It must have been dam strong fuel line Treeman used to fix his...!

There are two lines, supply and return. The return line carries fluid back from the steering box to the pump andshould not be pressurised. The supply line is pressurised, max pump pressure is regulated to 1400psi (97 bar)

Thanks for that , this is what i need to know...  I guess its the feed pipe thats gone on mine , rather than the return... I shall now be hunting for some hose that can cope with 90 plus bar , and hope a couple of jubilee clips on either end are going to keep it in place...

I am told that getting a replacement metal pipe is not going to be easy , but i guess that would be the best option...

They have farms in Poland. Anyone who repairs agricultural hydraulic lines should be able to fix one up for you.

I actually have a shedload of old Ursus ( Polish tractor ) hoses and stuff , but none the right size sadly... Now i know what kind of pressure we are talking about i shall be popping down to the Lewadowski tractor parts center to look for a suitable hose...

Last time i was there i met a guy who was buying brake tubing to make an illegal vodka still...
