Electric Window broken - please HELP
« on: October 04, 2010, 01:13:11 PM »

Hi all,

This morning while driving to work I put my electric window down on my Grand Cherokee Limited (2000 model) and when I tried to put it back up I heard a bang and then It wouldn't go up, just down. Hubby has taken the door apart to have a look and it seems that there is a cable that is slack. Any ideas what could be wrong and where I can get replacement parts that won't cost a fortune.
Many thanks

Bad news as it sounds like the cable has brocken from the mechanism & if its the same as my old Cherokee, the whole mechanism assy will need to be changed as I dont think the individual parts are repairable.

From memory your looking at £150, maybe more from a dealer, time to ring a few dealers.

I don't know if its the same as on a Cherokee (XJ) but my front window regulator broke I found a fix online.

http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Body/XJ_Power_Window_Regulator_Fix.htm

Bit fiddly but it works well.

The link above is a good fix, assuming that this is where your window mechanism has borken. My drivers door on my 2001 XJ broke 2 days ago and after inspection, I found that the tubing (the metal drive rod traverses) that attaches to the motor plastic bracket had detached and hence the window wouldn't go back up.

I've figured out a fix that involves making a small bracket to keep the tubing from moving away from the motor housing. I will try and 'jimmy' it together and, if successful, post some photos. I'm convinced (in my head) that it will work and save me £100!

Fingers crossed! Watch this space.  :icon_eek:

I actually managed to snap the plastic shrouding of the metal coil where it meets the motor casing getting the whole thing out - I would say if your going for a fix be really careful taking the assembly out and remember that you have to turn it/roll it - the whole assembly out from the inner door frame.

I just wedged the shroud and casing together and used 3 or 4 tie wraps to hold it in place.  It works but the motor doesn't stop when the window comes down so if I'm not careful the coil will unwind out of the shroud.

I keep tools in the Jeep :D

I used this to fix mine on my XJ over a year ago now. Never had a moments problem with it since. I used slightly larger split pins and eased out the runner a little to accommodate them but so far, after a year of frequent use, no issues.

Hello again. As promised, my easy fix for a broken window regulator. I've just created this blog thing, so I hope it works:

Water pump, sticky brake caliper, bad UJ, broken headlamp switch, CPS, rusty sill/floor/boot,
tailgate struts, saggy rear springs, ABS light on.
