2.8CRD Issues
« on: October 07, 2010, 07:09:50 PM »

The significant other has a 2.8 CRD WJ GC, she 'mistakingly' ran it very low on fuel and has since had issues regarding the enging cutting out and rough running, I have had the fuel filter changed and the fuel system flushed through by a mechanic I know I can trust. The DTC's were reset, but the problem returned and threw up the following codes P0340, P0620, P1130.

After extensive web based research!, 0340 is the crankshaft position sensor, 0620 is the charging circuit whis I assume is the alternator and 1130 is the fuel rail.
I think the latter 2 DTC's are as a result of the car cutting out whilst driving it, but not sure why the 0340.

I am going to disconnect the battery again tomorrow and reset the codes to see if they come back.

The rough running is not happening at present, and the car has not cutout, would anyone have any idea why this si happening.

Thanks

Your 2.8CRD is actually a 5 cyl 2.7CRD made by Mercedes. Other than your fuel tank being emptied of crap -
into the engine and it now being cleared out, can't think of anything else. Others will.

OI !!!!!! :098:  at least I'm not sitting on a bomb....... :diarrhea:

Ran quite low a couple of times as well but never had these problems.
On the other hand, had a go with the acetone treatment since it was quite a popular topic
a couple of months ago, scared shitless at first because I didn't want to melt my fuel lines, less is best.
I really, really think it helps. I think its smoother and more fuel economy.......or its just all wishful thinking  :icon_rolleyes:

Even though I have clocked up nearly 150k all with me driving on the merc 2.7CDI engine in a sprinter van I can't really help with this problem but I will comment on the crap from the tank theory for what it is worth.

In all the vehicles I have ever owned, and most of them considerably secondhand, I have always used every tankful of fuel to the limit, i.e I fill it up then drive it until the fuel light comes on and then a bit further before refuelling to the brim again. I have never had a single problem with dirty or contaminated fuel (petrol or diesel) and I have at times squeezed in a couple of litres more than the nominal tank size so I know they are pretty dry.

In your case the fact it was low on fuel may not be related to your problems at all. CPS is a common fault discussed on the Jeep forums for the petrol engines and if that is at fault I guess the cranking to try and restart the vehicle might give the low charge warning and maybe without a CPS signal the fuel pump isn't energised hence the fuel rail code? This is only speculation on my point but without wanting to incur large expenses on diagnostic services I would probably jump at replacing the CPS. Try to buy genuine or OEM as cheaper ones are known to be problematic out of the box sometimes. It might even be worth trying a Mercedes commercial dealer (usually at least one in any major city) to see if they can cross reference the part to a sprinter item as they seem to be better on the price of parts than Jeep or Merc passenger car dealers and if not, all the Jeep and Mercedes parts are distributed through the same network from Milton Keynes so they could even get you the genuine Mopar part (which will be a Mercedes item in a Mopar box!)
