What do you think to these tyres?
« on: November 09, 2010, 11:42:14 PM »

As the title says really:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/235-70-16-Recip-Trial-MUD-Terrain-tyres-x-4-/280507145822?pt=UK_Cars_Tyres_RL&hash=item414f875e5e

Looking at getting some mud tyres and on a budget so wondered what you thought to these? How noisy are they likely to be on the road and am I right in thinking they would fit on a completely unmodified '96 Grand?

Cheers,

Mark

Good offroad, very noisy on road, not sure about sizing for a Grand. Tyres are one thing I try not to save money on though - they are your only contact with the road, mud, rocks...

i had a set on a discovery..they were very very good in the gloopy stuff and no issues with reversing out  :017: also not as noisey as the bfg muds on the road..yes they are directional but had to run one the wrong way when i had a flat and it didnt make much difference tbh

give the guy a ring and see what he has that will suit your needs. I've bought from him before with no issues and he even supplies a cup of cha while you wait while he puts them onto rims. he has a vast amount of tyres in his storage building.

I have 235/85r16 Recips for off-road use and they are quite noisy at around 30-40mph on tarmac, but great in the mud. Be careful of the speed rating of them if you are planning to use them all the time.

Size wise mine were spot on 32" so those would measure 29". No probs fitting in the arches on that size.

I would be tempted to find an extra cheap set of rims and put 30" muds on them and keep your stock wheels for daily use. You'll find a GC bottoms out loads with 29" tyres.   :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

Thanks for the replies people.

Would I have any issues if I was to fit 30" tyres with no lift? Will be getting a lift but can't afford both just yet.

I had these on a vitara when I was into my green laning a while ago but had problems with balancing which is why I am looking to try some others, they did very well in the brown stuff though.

Most mud tyres are difficult to balance using the traditional methods, some tyres fitters hate them so much they try to get you not to buy them or they just won't bother balancing them. All down to the fact that deep tread patterns  actually move about when a vehicle is  at speed  so constantly unbalance them.

Do you think 30" tyres would fit with standard suspension without any rubbing issues?

30" will fit under the zj/zg fine as long as you don't go too wide. I went with 31's and a 2" budget boost first as it was less than £100 for the 2" lift. I had to adjust the steering stops a bit and only had v. slight rub on front arch when I disconnected the swaybar.

What size lift are you planning to do?

I'm looking to get a 3.5 lift in the future. It's annoying I can't afford the lift and tyres now really!
