Might be normal / Might be an Issue
« on: December 06, 2010, 01:14:01 PM »

Right,

2002 Jeep GC 4.7V8 60th Anniversary edition.

When its cold I have noticed this happening.

Its at low speed, and happened only a few times and after coming off an icy drive or icy road but it feels like a very poor change from the auto box or as it a diff is locking / unlocking and there is a decent clunk noise.

No change in driving, still pulls fine. It feels like when I had a Land Rover and I had to use the lever to put it in 4WD and if the cogs were not 100% lined up it would clunk into FWD.

Any thoughts??

Cheers James

check the correct oil is in the transfer case (or just change it) & check the joints in the front prop, the TC coming in & driving the front axle is seamless on mine. Have you tried in in 4-Lo, that will lock the centre diff take that out of the equation

1.6 litres of Mopar 247 transfer case oil

Cost me around £20 when I changed it a few weeks back, wrong oil causes the clutches to grab, may be your issue

No friction modifier in the diffs will also cause bother.
