Oil leaking from the intercooler
« on: December 12, 2010, 09:49:50 PM »

I had a look underneath my Cherokee 2.5TD -95. I noticed that there is oil leaking from the intercooler where the hose from the turbo is connected. I assume there should not be any oil there at all so I'm guessing it is something wrong with the turbo or could it be something else? What should I do? If the turbo needs to be replaced, can I keep on driving it until it fails completely or could that lead to other problems? Please advice!

Unless you're using a lot of oil, it's fine.

I recently changed the oil after 700km and it had used up about a litre since the last change. Where does the oil in the intercooler come from? Should i clean out the oil from the intercooler? If so, how?

My 2.5 td cherokee always leaves a puddle when i park it , and it is coming from the same place as yours...

It was doing it when i got it a year ago , and it will no doubt be doing it when i sell it....i don,t worry about it...

I beleive the oil in fact comes from the oil feed  to the turbo and from the turbo itself as  oil is sucked passed the oil seals in the unit.

most of the oil in there will be from the vent pipe, that the oil catch can does not catch - it feeds into the air pipe

This is the worst case scenario I suspected. Is there any way of determining if it is oil leaking from the turbo or if it is from the vent pipe?

I would think you would be able to trace it back but you would need to flush everything clean first.

EVERY 2.5TD has oil through those pipes - it all depends on the amount

If it is the turbo run it until it fucks up - but I  really doubt its the turbo going

I've been known to clean the intercooler out - but only because it was removed anyway

:imwitstupid:Unless your engine is consuming unusually large quantities of oil, dont worry.
