Guys,

I have got my hands on a Jeep TJ that has been heavily modified (at a reet barging too), but it does need some work doing to the gearbox or transfer box as there are some bad noises coming from it. Ive looked ont he web and found a few but they are not specialists in Jeep. If anyon can recommend a company in the South/Home Counties that i can contact.

I also need to replace the seals on the steering box too, but thats not a difficult job and should only take a few hours (hopefully)

I also noticed that the previous owner dented the rear shocks so i am up for any recommednations on what you guys use?

As for shocks, if you prefer to keep your fillings in your teeth, then Procomp might not be your best choice.

So the TJ is it the "power house" also known at the 4.0 liter? If so your gearbox (if stick shift) is the AX15 normally very reliable - what system have you?

I have the manual 5 Speed. It only makes a nasty noise when changing down (rease the clutch) i get juddering and a knocking noise from just under the shafts. Is it worth taking a few pics?

when you say heavily modded, what suspension lift you running, it could be driveline vibes that have never been sorted

the gearbox is usually trouble free tbh

Yes photos will be good - would like to see the out put for the rear prop including the UJ's also measure the rear wheel centre to the bottom of the wheel arch - can you also take a photo of the suspension trailing arms.

steering box- i fitted a used one of an xj until i can get mine re-furbed

and dents in your rear shocks are caused by excessive axle movement, wrong bump stops maybe. You can get brackets which extend the shock towards the rear of the truck, they can help prevent it

but we really need to know the spec as it is modded

I will take some pics on Saturday.

The truck has a 2" body lift and a 4" suspension lift

And I live in Aylesbury, Bucks. No Southern jokes lol

I did notice the rear shaft had way too much play, but I've not checked the front yet

That's probably your problem then. Is it the standard shaft (single UJ at each end) or does it have a double cardan joint (like the front one)

Dose your transfer case have a short shaft conversion if not this could be the problem

Well Paul (Tragic) kindly popped round my house today to have a look at the Jeep. And it could be a few things. Front Drive shaft is nice and loose. Front whhel bearings and drive shafts.

On his recommendation i will call Elliott at EDM in Bicester tomorrow so he can have a look and releive me of a few quid. But below are a few pics i took today.

Is it me, or does the pinion angle on the rear prop look wrong? Could just be the photo....... Anyway, if it was me, before getting raped by Elliott, I would tale the front prop off , make sure the centerline of the rear diff pinion is exactly aligned with the cetreline of the rear propshaft adjusting the upper control arms if necessary. That should eliminate most of your vibration issues. Then replace any worn UJ ccomponents in the front and rear props, bolt on a pair of new hub assemblies (check the UJs behind them while they're out) and job's a good'un
