STARTING PROBLEM.
« on: January 17, 2011, 08:56:25 PM »

Can anyone restore my faith in my Cherokee 2.8 CRD(2004). I recently had an air leak on the bottom of the diesel filter where the water sepsrster/ fuel heater is situated. New filter and seals now fitted and filter housing bled ok. It will now only fire up for about a second then die if the key is removed and re-inserted, if the key is not removed it wont fire at all. The SKIS light only comes on for 3 seconds as the manual says it should. Any help would be much appreciated.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes. You may have read posts about people wanting to read 'codes' from
their car's computer? Well that's a DTC, and it's the car's way of telling you what it thinks is
wrong. They often, but not always, will light the amber 'check engine' light on the speedo.

Do this

Quote from: wjjeeps.com
Turn the ignition key until the digital odometer displays, repeat three times in succession and then back to "On" (On/Off, On/Off, On/Off, On). At the fourth "On" the odometer will be replaced with codes. If no codes are present then "Done" will appear.

If there are any codes, get back to us.

Tried this and only get oddometer reading every time i.e. No Fault Codes or No 'DONE' message.

Hmm. Read this http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_can_you_read_engine_malfunction_codes_on_a_2003_Jeep_Liberty_without_a_scanner

Or buy a scanner. Mine was $22 from Amazon. Your best bet would be to ask on lostkjs.com

I can get hold of a scanner but where is the OBD11 port located and where can I find out what the code relate to?

If it follows US rules, then the ODBII port is within 6 inches of the steering column. Usually between the bottom
of the dash and the pedals. The codes are here http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm

 :iagree:

Or you could press the speedo's trip meter, the one that resets the trip (not swimming trunks :icon_e_biggrin:), and switch on ignition and watch the lights and speedo go through it's self check, and after mileage has done it's bit, you could also be left with a code.

Just tried the Self Check method. Only thing I noticed was 4.4 before mileometer reading returned and it was not the trip reading as that is on 70.8. Any idea's?

Pressing the odometer and turning the ignition on puts the cluster into the "actuator test". This allows checking of the gauges and cluster controlled lamps. Hard wired lamps like 4wd and handbrake need to be tested manually. Newer clusters will display SOF and a number which is the cluster software version. Any codes displayed will be cluster related and not Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) codes.

Just plugged in the scanner and there is no codes stored. Could there still be an air lock in the diesel system between the filter and the cylinders and if so would this cause the problem?

Just left Battery Cables shorted together for 10 minutes then re-fitted the fully charged battery, same result just fires each time key turned but wont run at all. Could it still be air in diesel system somewhere?

If it cranks, fires up almost immediately on all cylinders, runs for a second or two, then stops, it's possibly a SKIS failure. Try your spare key.

possibly air still in the system, if you bleed at the injectors, you should be ok, might be a plan to check (if it has one) the fuel pump relay, mine got weak/intermittant/wet in my tj and produced very similar symptoms, fortunately my horn relay was the same, (micro relay) which i swapped  to get me out of le poopoo, quite literally

SKIS light behaves normally and no fault codes on scanner, but only have 1 key. All this started after air leak on Diesel Filter Housing which has now been sorted.

I have bled pipes up to where it splits from 1 pipe to 4 for the injectors and fuel comes out under pressure there so if there is a pump relay I would think its ok.

The CRD is a common rail system. Be careful messing with the fuel lines. They run at up to 23000 psi when running. Fuel at that pressure will penetrate your skin and could kill you. Many aftermarket scan tools won't do a proper job on a diesel Jeep. I would suggest you get it to a dealer or a diesel specialist who can do a proper diagnostic on the fuel system and the SKIS.

It cranks ,and fires but dosen.t run for a second or two (only fires). If key only turned back to run then try again it wont even fire. Take key out and then back in again and it will fire once more. SKIS warning lamp works as it should.

Doesn't sound like air in the system.

Get it to a diesel specialist with the right kit to read the fuel pressure.

Just picked my Cherokee up from specialist who could find no fault codes stored at all but found a dodgy electrical connection on injector No.1,seems to be starting and running fine now so I thought would up-date you all just incase anyone else may get a similar problem.
