Grand Cherokee, (WK), Tyres
«

Guys.
I would like to fit some more rugged tyres to my 2006 Grand Cherokee Overland CRD. The off road element is mainly a wet muddy field and sand. I tow a pretty heavy trailer across all this.
I have read some details about quicker on road wear and increased road noise that have really confused me.
What are my options sticking to the standard rims?
Apologies if this is a real numpty question but I am baffled!
Thanks in advance.

All Terrain (A/T) or mud terrain (M/T) tyres will be your friend
For sand A/T may be better
M/Ts are a tad noisier on road but are worth it!
Good quality makes such as General Grabber or BFG should last 30k plus miles

not a silly question at all, most guys here will tell you that whatever set up you have you can still slip and slide on wet grass, and a heavy trailer wont help.
personally unless you are driving on wet grass every day/week I would stick with a good set of A/Ts and just choose you route carfully.
sand is a different story, either wide and flat or skinny with paddles

Hello
Thanks for the responses so far. From what you've said it sounds like a set of General Grabber or BFG A/T's would do nicely. However the plot thickens! The current tyres are 245/60 R18 and I can't seem to find any A/T's in this size.
Does anybody know what other size would fit or alternatively any recommendations for a good tyre fitter/supplier that I can contact?
Thanks again.

Problem is that 18 inch rims are too low profile for a tyre with a decent tread. You might think
about getting some 15 or 16 inch rims. Rims off a 99-04 Grand Cherokee WJ will fit if they clear
the calipers.

Have a look at the wheel / tyre size calculator here
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
For comparison, the standard fit on my VW Touareg is 255 x 55 18's & I run general Grabber UHP's. These are run by many on the Touareg forum as a good road biased semi AT option.
Good in snow & supposed to wear well
Have a look on Camskill & Event tyres websites for a starter
