Grand Cherokee torque converter lockup.....
« on: January 25, 2011, 02:34:56 AM »

Hi..,
have a 2001 3.1td,
have searched the forums but cant find the info I'm after,
my query is at what speed should the converter lock up?
mine currently needs to be doing about 75 mph/2500 rpm before it locks, which seems far too high!
apart from this its fine smooth changes goes in to 3/od between 35-40, no funny noises, clean fluid.
thanks for any advice

Converter clutch engagement in third or fourth
gear range is controlled by sensor inputs to the powertrain
control module. Inputs that determine clutch
engagement are: coolant temperature, engine rpm,
vehicle speed, throttle position, and manifold vacuum.
The torque converter clutch is engaged by the
clutch solenoid on the valve body. The clutch can be
engaged in third and fourth gear ranges depending
on overdrive control switch position. If the overdrive
control switch is in the normal ON position, the
clutch will engage after the shift to fourth gear, and
above approximately 72 km/h (45 mph). If the control
switch is in the OFF position, the clutch will engage
after the shift to third gear, at approximately 56
km/h (35 mph) at light throttle.

thanks Mike,
so is there a common problem on these i can check for?
the engine temp gauge only just goes above quarter, the thermostat is opening as the top hose gets hot.
used an infered temp reader on the heater hoses and they are about 75 c, is this about normal for the diesel?
dont really want to thro anymore money at it just yet as only had the heads changed middle of last year
