Jeep GC 1996 4.0 THINK I NEED WATER PUMP!!! Urgent like...
« on: January 29, 2011, 08:35:05 AM »

Heeeeelllllllppppppppp

I've been really enjoying my Jeep over the past month or so. Great for work and all. But have had to top up the overflow bottle a couple of times. Also, I'd noticed the odd wet patch on the ground where I'd parked, but just assumed it was rainy stuff. Last night, I got back in our other motor and noticed water dripping under the front of the Jeep - not fast, but enough to leave a big wet patch. Wanted to check whether it was rain or cat piss or whatever, so had a taste of it....definitely coolant.

Just going to go out for a proper look, but I'm fearing it might be the water pump as the Jeep has been making the the occassional howling noise when cold since I got it. I thought this was the air con clutch but couldn't really figure where it was coming from. I now think it is the water pump....

My problem, I need the Jeep for work on Monday, and there is nobody in the local Jeep parts dept till then. If I can get water pump today (if that is the problem) then I can get it sorted this weekend. But, where the hell can I get a water pump NOW???

Heeeeelllllppppp, please!

And happy weekend all  :icon_winkle:

:icon_super: Cheers Mike. Just phoned them up - got one on the shelf, £48 and they're open all day today..... only 10 minutes away from my door  :icon_biggrin:

Hopefully I'll get this sorted. Was in a panic about removing and refitting the fan shroud after hearing that's the worst part of the job. Went out to the Jeep, tugged the shroud about a bit, and it seems someone in the past has already put it back in and decided not to bother with the bottom two screws. Any pointers for what to expect? Am I right in thinking it's just a case of removing fan, loosening the pulley, slackening belt and pulling the pump?

Help is much appreciated.

Might be worth fitting a new bottom hose while it's out. It's a crappy job to do with the pump in situ.

Quick update......
After undoing some screws to allow rad to move a bit and undoing top 2 rad shroud screws, drained rad, and put some thick cardboard between rad and fan to protect the rad, and started undoing everything.
- Got the 4 nuts off the fan,
- lifted fan and shroud out together (right result them two bottom screws already being out),
- slackened off alternator, removed belt,
- removed two bolts on power steering pump bracket,
- undid the hoseclips using my ratcheting hoseclip pliers,
- removed hose from water pump to heater,
- whipped off t/stat housing (2 screws),
- removed water pump screws (4 of them) and wiggled water pump out from behind the power steering bracket,
- removed bottom rad house from water pump

Total time to get pump out....about half an hour.

Scraping old gasket crap off seems to be the worst bit.

Stuck hose pipe in rad filler and gave rad a good flush through, then stuck it in heater matrix pipe and flushed that through.

Took 10 minute drive to Euro Car Parts and picked up new pump (£48 +vat), new t/stat, some RTV Silicon gasket stuff (as they didn't have a t/stat gasket in), 5 litres of antifreeze/coolant, then pootled round to another motor factors where I picked up 5 litres of distilled water. Now just need to bung it all together while the Mrs is doing cooked breakfast in the morning!

One thing I'm going to regret is that I didn't get a replacement bottom hose! The one on there seems fine with no sign of damage or bulging, and some numpty in the past had refitted the rad or something (which looks new) with the hoseclip being put in an inaccessible orientation unless I remove the rad as well!

Fingers crossed that'll be fine.

what a bummer! Put everything back together all proper like, filled up coolant, started engine.....and drip drip drip drip. Read the note that came with the pump and it says that air hole will leak water for a while. But how long is a while, I wondered. Topped up, bled the system all proper, still drip drip drip, but no drippy when engine off (before replacing pump it was leaking with engine off). Went for a spin to get engine hot...still drip drip drip when engine running. Anyone any experience of this? Everything was all done up proper, gasket faces all cleaned off, pump seated properly. I'm wondering.....I bet it's that poxy lower hose where it goes over the pump fitting! At least I can get to easily from underneath and get the clamp off using my ratcheting hose clamp pliers (best thing I own they are). Looks like I'll be ordering another and swapping that over! Anything else it could be?

I have had a problem altho not with the water pump  which was down to the fact I did not use a propper gasket, hence altho it was pulled up tight it wasn't actually sealed completely.

Definitely not core plug. Or gasket. And I think the panic may be over. Just went  out for another drive, got back, left engine running.....and no more leaking. System still full. I'm hoping all ok now, and that water was just peeing out the weep hole for longer than I expected! Possibly I didn't bleed the system properly as I went and reattached heater hose before filling up.....

Pleased to say...all has been fine today on a 50 mile round trip - not a single drop of water on the road and levels exactly as they were yesterday. PHEW!

Phone local Jeep main dealer for price of bottom rad hose, just out of curiosity like, and they quoted £69!!!!! And £139 for the pump.... OUCH. Well pleased that Mike suggested Euro Car Parts!

People tend to over tighten the thermostat housing which distorts and can leak it runs down the pump spindle and looks like a leaking waterpump
Also the bottom hose rubs against the guard that s next to the bottom pulley, this causes a split which only weeps slightly under pressure then seals at idle which makes it hard to detect. :017:
remove airbox if your replacing bottom hose much easier
