Suggestions wellcomed for a big cheap diesel engine to power a FSJ Cherokee, as much as I love the V8, I just can't afford it as a DD

I've got a divorced Dana 300 (out of a Transit 4x4 conversion) put aside so that I could use the engine/transmission from a large 4x2 van or small truck.

Question is what?

Standard size 2.5 TD units from vans and 4x4s are not gonna pull two tons of FSJ with any gusto.

Gotta be at least 3 litres and turbo'd I'd think

Best older diesel I have driven is the older LC 4.2TD, dunno how cheap to source one though. Modern ones have too much eletrickery about them

Cummins 6BT out of a Leyland Roadrunner. Problem is that a big diesel is still thirtsy, and costs that much
more at the pump.

Too big for a FSJ engine bay by about 4" or so, I seen some on the IFSJA with their radiators pushed out into where the front bumper should be

Not for me.

I drove one of the aforementioned Leyland Roadrunners back in the '90's, but with the Leyland engine fitted.
I got about 17-18mpg with an average all up weight of about four and a half tons

I'm thinking Cruiser 4.2 if I could find one, maybe even Isuzu 3.1 at a push................

There is/was a firm that converts the 4.2 (or 4.6 or whatever) petrol Range Rover by fitting a 2.8 turbo diesel Mitsubishi engine. My other vehicle is a 2.8TD Mitsubishi Delica, and the engine will easily power a Jeep......BUT, I've been comparing the fuel economy of my 4 litre Jeep against my 2.8TD Mitsubishi, and they;re about the same. The Mitsu was averaging 18mpg, and the Jeep is averaging about 19mpg, and petrol is cheaper than diesel, so the Jeep is proving cheaper to run.

much as i admire German engineering FJ dood, are ya serious? A tractor engine in a Chief? Dont ya feel all dirty and soiled for even thinkin it?

save yaself dood, 5 of the CJ prayer and throwin some water over ya head may get ya beck into redemption, then hammer that V8

he is just stating the obvious a huge heavy thing like a fulsize is not goint to be a viable daily drive with a v8 carbed petrol fine for tooling around on a sunny sat afternoon but as a daily

price ya gonna pay for an engine, plus the time puttin it in (im assumin he doesnt work for free for anyone else so therefore wont count it as free work), plus the extra cost of diesel, means he is gonna be a few years in before he is up on costs, so he may as well stay petrol and see where he is in a few years time

surely half the joy of old iron is floorin the V8, or burblin thru the traffic, not trundlin thru the traffic to the accompanied by the sweet tones of tumble dryer full of old cutlery
