XJ VM diesel 1998 maintenance points
« on: February 07, 2011, 11:01:01 PM »

I have a 1998 2.5 td, with some service history but not sure how much has been done in the past. Is there anything  that needs to be checked before problems occur. I take it there is a cam chain?

Don,t listen to such wicked talk...  Ok so the VM engine has a few problems , but only minor things ..like the heads cracking , the hydraulic valve adjusters collapsing and such...

It all adds to the fun of owning a Jeep powered by this marvel of Italian engineering...

As the experts have said , change the oil and water often , and if you throw in a bottle of steel seal you might even avoid the cracked heads...

I have done many miles in my VM powered Jeep , running on steel seal after an overheating problem....

But my next Jeep will not have a vm engine i think..?

If you don't want to use petrol torching it, you could consider pushing it in the canal. While
you're down there, you might find a rusty old shopping trolley, which should be more reliable.

later vm engine are fine, but as the years and milage roll on 2 or 3 oil changes a year would be a good idea,i also but a fuel treatment in every 6 months or so,just redex but before the mot a can of fortes goes in to let her blow here nose as part of the pre mot service. plus oil and air filter amd oil filter

there is grease points in the steering gear, get a cheap grease gun and give them a grease, tie rof ends etc, there is also a grease point on the front drive shaft,if the grease nipples are rusted you may have to fit new once, inthe steering gear you may have to change out the whole joint if its dry and the grease nipple is rusted, check you drive line seals for weaps/leaks,the transfere box and diff oils should be changed out and gearbox oil would be a good idea as well at that age.

check you front wheels for play, tie rof ends and top and bottom ball joints will need checked

new set of glow plugs if she takes a while to fire up in the morning first time.

i also but gearbox and engine oil additives in,and my 98 2.5td run sweet as a net engine wise.

Thanks for all the productive info and the other stuff which gave me a laugh! :icon_biggrin: I had an idea of the reputation of this jeep when I bought it so no big surprises. Clutch release bearing and idler pulley already gone and caused damage spent Saturday on the m5. Thank god for AA parts and labour cover. Will keep on top of servicing it and have a rabbits foot hanging on the rear view mirror! Cheers

maintenance points for the vm diesel jeep

buy a petrol and save money.

on a serious note buy the service manual or download a copy as they are worth every penny if you used to the spanners. Only a few parts are interchangeable with the petrol variant

see if the clutch release bearing is gubbed, change the whole clutch out, and the bearing, better idea in the long run and make sure they grease the new bearing.,also grease under the gear stick gatter, ours was well dried out.

a pulley from jeep is around £80 plus, but there is a place that does real vm pulley  parts for around £40 new

another place that get over looked is the water pump, this will have a small slot on the top of it for greasing, get a sringe and fill it with grease, clean out the old har grese in the slot, inject the new stuff, this will keep the bearings in the pump in good cond and help stop leaks,if the pump goes get one from unipart, they come in around £35 and grease it up before fittting as there dry out the box.

sorry about spelling i have been up since 3am
