Twisted front prop?
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:20:33 PM »

Ive just struggled to take the front prop off the TJ, due to the fact it is not compressing/expanding.  I believe this has now caused the front pinion seal to leak as well  :010:

I assume the splines have somehow become twisted.

This is the 2nd prop to have been destroyed like this in less than a year, so I assume there is something wrong somewhere, which will need fixing before I order a new propshaft or get one of the old ones rebuilt.

Any ideas?

Have you measured it stuffed and on full droop?

you actually use it for froading rather than just shopping.

is the prop inline or biased to one side adding a side load

The props won't compress or expand.  They were fine when first fitted.  The current prop was fitted last August, and was in good condition.  The previous prop was removed in July, although it was fine when greased in June.  The damage could have occured at Seven Sisters or Tong in July.

Haven't got a clue  :017:

I'm thinking the front prop is not long enough to compensate for the lift!!

Remove the prop take the required measurements and decide if the OE is within tolerance.

If its anything like my front prop the grease nipple for the splines is at the front near the uj and the hole to let the grease out is at the front next to the uj therefore when greasing it just takes the easiest path straight out of the front bypassing the splines and is just a rotating mass of mud and water waiting to seize :banghead: hopefully a TJ one is a better design but its sounds like it isnt.

The previous prop, custom built, ran fine for a number of years.  In fact the stock prop before that was only replaced due to needing new DC joint.

The current prop seemed to have plenty of expansion/compression before fitting, although I do understand what you are saying.  It just seems strange that I have suffered the same failure twice in less than six months.
