there was a time where everybody was talkin about building a stroker and uber cool they were i never liked the idea but did anyone build one and was any good

It never stacked up when I looked at this - for me the V8 was more cost effective by far.

If you have money in your Jeep with a 4litre its going to be easier than flogging it & buying a v8. Have a crank & pistons for a 4.6 stroker tucked away, keep meaning to get it done, my WJ is a lifer now & with 210k miles on the clock a builtup 4.6 stroker will come in handy pretty soon methinks. Plenty have been done on the other side, why not over here

In the mountain of JPs that BD now has are the ramblings of the JP crew that have built a few.......................... and then they put the original back in and you never heard about said XJ called 'JR' for 2 years................

Turns out 4.7 or 4.6 or whatever ate camshafts, blew headgaskets and holed pistons... and no one could see why............ injectors had to be especially acquired for 21 or 25 lb pressure etc.
The last I read was an admission that they had not known or tested any stroker that lived beyond 20,000 miles.
Whereas the standard 4.0 litre known as 'the anvil' will go 300-400,000 miles or more.............provided its got oil and you don't cook it.

Anyway CJ20 has my engine wish................. 383 with 400 bhp................ job done.............. bolt up to my gearbox too.

Its snake oil and kings new clothes I'm afraid ,and sadly too many people have been seduced by the hype.

An engine which has been increased in swept volume by having a longer stroke crank fitted.

In AMC/Chrysler Jeep terms that means a 4.0 XJ/YJ/TJ engine fitted with a longer throw crank from the earlier 4.2 Jeep Renegade era

Nice idea for offroad use, but a used AMC 360 will drop in and give more bang for ya buck any day

If I had the money it would be V8 - An XJ with a V8 rumble would sound awesome - would probably stop me missing the flat 4 rumble of my old Impreza too.

There is that US place that sells V8 conversions as a kit. I suspect the price is probably a bit on the "strong" side.

An AMC 304/360/401 V8 will bolt right upto an AW4 auto box as fitted to a XJ 4.0 Auto, and the auto box will stand up to it OK.

Commonly shoved into FSJs in the US (the AW4 box)

No need for expensive kits unless you're in love with Chevy or Ford engines.

I've no idea if a XJ rolling chassis is happy with a V8.

The guy that does Klune in California has a chev V8 to 700 r4 to klune underdrive to dana300 in an XJ and markets the bits..... seems to survive, although serious offroading may pretzel the whole plot, and no mention of axles

Make a good street smoker or tow rig I guess.

v8 takes alot of work to fit into an XJ so the easiest route is a stroker,

other jeeps are slightly more easier to fit a burbling v8.

the thing i never understood with stroking a 4.0 was gearing to the size tyre was a better answer whats not to like with the engine as it is powerfull smooth and just sweet no need for a v8 in an xj to my mind

true, edge has gone off mine a touch though, could do with a genuine 50k miler engine to swap into mine. Must do a compression check & see how its going, just the tick that is bugging me

Wildwood's comments from JP Mag are some of the reasons that the excitment has gone out of it for me. I have all the parts and a machined block but then came to build the cylinder head and read so many different ideas about what strength valve spring to use and shimming rockers for a slightly decreased block deck height that I lost the plot.

Recently I have been in touch with Lance Husband about his latest work on strokers and I now think that I will just assemble what I have and see what happens. There are so many horror stories but some seem to be more or less reliable and mine is a very mild build, probably just a bit mor torque and maybe the same hp as a fresh new, 4.0. My conclusion is that a stroker is an okay way to rebuild a 4.0 engine if you need a new engine but not the way to go for making power.

I think the small block chevy with Novak conversion kit is probably the best swap I've seen - reliable engine, parts everywhere, v8 rumble...

Also, re. gearing - The lack of power is noticeable when you get to 35s, even with the recommended 4.88 gears. I drove Vince Bentley's Silver XJ and the 0-60 must have been double a stock XJ. With that setup it would be great to have a v8, even just around 250 hp would pull it better.
