Hi Guys

I have already introduced myself on the introductions board so some of you may have already read some of this.

I am seriously looking into the option of purchasing a Cherokee (4.0 Petrol) with the aim of doing the following:-

3-6" lift
Larger tyres/wheels
Engine remap
Snorkel
Possible louder/more throaty exhaust
Possible re-pain (Myself) to flat matt black

Total budget <= £4,000. (Inc purchasing vehicle)

Primary use would be winter and holidays in UK whe I would need the space and towbar for my trailer and of course it would be a project for me to do. (Expect < 3,000 miles per year as it would be a second vehicle kept in garage)

Any thoughts/ideas/comments on the above?

I would like to get together a list of parts etc to see the feasability.

wouldn't bother with a remap. As for exhaust, change the headers for a performance set, made the biggest difference of any mod to my XJ

I've done a fair bit of research into remapping and chipping and the best solution seems to be a Tunit chip. It has 11 different settings allowing you to get the engine to exactly where you want it without putting a strain on the drivetrain etc.. They're not cheap but it seems like the way to go and they are easily removed when you want to return the car to stock. Have a chat with Chris at Surrey Offroad. He's now installing them for customers and knows all about them.

3-6" lift........................how deep is your pocket and what brand you like. the higher you go the more expensive it gets as you will need to change other components apart from suspension.

Larger tyres/wheels........depends on lift, bigger the tyre the more foul issues you will encounter.

Engine remap.................not worth it, keep it std for longevity

Snorkel.........................do you need one or will it be for show ?

Possible louder/more throaty exhaust...........if your handy make your own out of parts

Possible re-pain (Myself) to flat matt black......Bulldog terratory

should be doable with 4k budget but that will be using some used parts etc and will depend on what year of jeep.

paint is a doddle, 3 roller brushes, tin of white spirit, some wet & dry, 5L primer, 10L matt black, sunny day: quick rub down but nowt extravagant, wipe over with white spirit, roll on the primer, by the time u finished u can start again with the 1st coat off matt on a new roller, same again for last coat, and as the sun goes down quick whizz around with the white spirit to get the paint of glass etc, jobs a good 'un

relax with a beer while bein dazzled by ya skills and progress

Seriously I'd have thought with a £4K ish budget you would do better buying an XJ that had already been modified, unless you get a real buzz from buying and fitting new kit.

Downside is if you buy a heavily modified vehicle it may already have been thrashed to within an inch of its life offroad, and the mods may have been bodged so you have to rework everything, a real PITA

but i could be bluffin, leavin out a secret component in the process so he will have to get me to come and rescue it when its fooked up, thus enhancin my status as birtys No1 truck paintin specialist

Downside is if you buy a heavily modified vehicle it may already have been thrashed to within an inch of its life offroad, and the mods may have been bodged so you have to rework everything, a real PITA

Its likely to spend most of is time on-road, so I don't want something with dings and dents....

I am also looking at it for a project and something to get my hands dirty on.  More than happy to purchase second-hand parts to keep the costs down.

At the moment I am still weighing up the options of either spending £14k on a 2 year old 2.0 diesel Outlander, or spending the same money on purchasing a 1year old diesel fiesta for most of my mileage and then getting a Cherokee for a project and winter/holidays.....  Fuel prices rising so much at the moment are rather concerning!

Wrangler Sahara won't do 60mpg!

I can see the logic of this, buy a cheap economical beater as a DD and hopefully the substancial fuel savings will allow the running of a weekend monster

Precisely!  I am lucky enough to get a Car allowance or Company car so I am also taking this into consideration in the calculations.  A 5 door Fiesta 1.6 TDCI would easily get 70+mpg on a run.... and only £420 a year company car tax if u pay 20% tax!!
