CJ 6 Rollcage ideas
« on: March 01, 2011, 08:55:11 AM »

Right I've sketched up a couple of rollcage ideas for my 6, I'm not wanting to go mad, just a simplistic 6 pointer with the seats mounted to it, comments and further ideas welcomed.

Idea 1

Idea 2

First one looks better.

Second looks a bit Frankenstein :icon_eek:

Both seem to lack diagonal bracing behind the seats

The first one is my favourite too, as for the rear trianglation, I'm not sure which way to tackle this as I will be putting in a removable rear seat, if I do too much then getting into the seat will become impossible, also headroom will also be comprimised, and I don't like the whole full cage to the back I think they look naff but thats my thoughts.

prefer the first one but remember the middle support needs to be a vertical hoop for best support and strength.

thats what i thought, but if you look at the majority of the ones on the Jeep.com forum most are either angled backwards or bent to match the windscreen, whilst this may look better i too was of the same opinion as you with verticle being much stronger, so I've adjusted my design to verticle middle leg and change the rear support leg position, think this is what I'll go with,

That's the one................looking good.

Only other type is the one Nosebolt showed re-fenders............. lime green with only half cage??

This type uses tube on either side from front to back and is then linked across............ they call it a buggy cage I think.............

only prob is that over here if ya do comps you have to have individual hoop behind driver..........personally think they look good.

make sure the main hoops are made from one continuous piece as well.

Funny you mention that as there is 2 thoughts on that idea, you either make the front and rear hoops out of one piece and brace between them (front to back) or you make each side as a continual hoop and brace side to side, some prefer the later due to the fact that the first point of impact in a roll over is the side and therotically having this as one piece makes a stronger shield. Not sure which way I will go, I have traditionally gone with a full hoop front and rear, we will see what happens.

Had another thought late last night for the rear hoop (they always come at 1am??) this would make it easier to get into the rear whislt still giving the triangulation needed,

What you think

is this dual use (daily driver and offroad toy)? if so have you considered using a bolt in brace? just fit when you are off road and leave out for daily access

Was thinking of doing that also, but I want the seat belt harness anchor points to attach to the cage, with this system I can't have a removable bar, good idea though
