2004 2.8 CRD - brake and ABS warning lights coming on.
« on: March 03, 2011, 08:15:11 PM »

Yesterday evening while out driving both the brake warning light and the ABS warning light came on for no apparent reason. I parked the car for a few hours while having dinner and then drove home and the lights were still on. Same thing this morning when I headed out but after about a mile or so, both lights went out and haven't reappeared. I checked the fluid level and it's fine. I did have the ABS light come on during bad snow a month or so back but that seemed to have been caused by snow covering the sensors. This time there's no snow and the brake light is on as well.

Any suggestions, guys?

The speed sensor in the rear diff is a common issue. Go to Jeep and get a diagnostic scan done.

Thanks, Mike, but I'm a long way from a Jeep agent who might have such equipment. What would be the consequence of the speed sensor failing? No ABS? Or something more worrying?

Check your tyre pressures.

I had a similar error, where the ABS and brake light came on.  ABS was disabled, but the brakes did function.  It happend when I was in Spain, so I attributed it to the heat and dust.  It was an intermittant fault, which cleared when I replaced the tyres (one of the rear ones had a slow leak).

Check the wire to the abs sensor on the rear axle, seen it becoming damaged by being trapped between the gearbox/transfer case & body & causing same faults you report.

Had same on BMW,was the ABS sensor on front drivers side.Had to change it 3 times though before it cleared it though,so pays to get a diagnostic done first to pin point it,first was cheapie off Ebay, load of crap, second oem Hella, still faulty, and 3rd time garage  fitted a genuine secondhand one to sort it out as i wasnt paying the stealerships prices

Thanks for all these suggestions, guys. I did a run of about 60 miles today and no sign of the warning lights coming on so perhaps it was just a temporary glitch. But when I get back to civilisation later this year (I hope!) I'l get a Jeep dealer to check it out as I doubt if anyone here could do it, or at least do it properly.
