KJ 2.5 CRD biting me in the ass ? Calling all KJ techies
« on: March 19, 2011, 06:14:11 PM »

I had a look at the non starting KJ today :  First observations

Fuel tank gauge does not move when turning ignition on......so I thought the Mrs had run it dry.  Got 15 ltrs. and put it in. Then she came home from shopping and said she put 40 quid in last wednesday.   Me getting covered in diesel was a useless then exercise then

Remembering that Jeeps electrickery go haywire when battery is on the way out I got charger out and it kept on charging full wack for a couple of hours. It obviously is not holding charge.  I bought a new battery.....which does not fit but connected it anyway. KJ turns over nicely but does not fire.

Fuel gauge not moving (tank must be abt 3/4 now)
Glowplug (light) does not come on.

Noticed somesort of switch in the battery tray which probably is a cut out switch.  I'm sure the ill fitting battery dit not depress it but then again it did not fire with the old battery sitting on top of it either.

I'm sure it must be electrickery so checked some fuses.

Pissed of with it now so I grabbed a beer and knocked it on the head.

What I can do is put old battery in tomorrow and hook it up to the WJ and see what happens.

Any other ideas welcome.

Cheers, Dutch out !!

The thing in the battery tray is the battery temperature sensor. Did mrs. Dutch put 40 litres of petrol in it by any chance?

Unlikely but I'll give you her mobile so you can ask her yourself  :hysterical:  might get no food this evening if I try that  :100:

Put fuel in on Wednesday and drove home 15 miles....pulling away from roundabout in town on Thursday morning KJ cut out.....coasted to a halt...waited a minute....started again and drove home.....Friday morning no go.

alarm/immobiliser prob :017:

Pulled all the fuses....all ok...

Mrs. found out that we have some sort of cover from Greenflag via our Natwest bank account  :017: so called a man out.

First he asked if she had put correct fuel in...she's adamant she has.  I said, hang on, she has driven 20/30 miles since fuelling up.  He said
he knows of diesel beemers coming down from oop country on a tank of petrol.

Then he had me turn the engine over while spraying ether in it (I hate it when they do that, just doesn't seem right) and it ran on ether for a bit until it died.
So conclusion is that it gets no fuel.

Then he sits behind the wheel and tries to start.  We all know that the whole dash lights up untill the ping-pong-chimes have stopped but he claims that both keys
have lost their programming and the whole fuel system is immobilized because the key light is on on the dash....yeah yeah so it the MIL light.

Ehmmm.....can this happen mid journey ? apparently it can due to radiation from mobile masts or police arials...but that still does not explain how it stalls and then starts up again only to sleep on it for a night and then decide to not start at all.  Not only that, she's driven that route for the past 12 months, which happens to be past the big Truro Police station when she stalled on Thursday.

OK....if it is only a free recovery to the nearest Jeep garage and a re-programming job I can live with that.........but,  big but.....that would be tooo easy.  I think there's more going on here, and once the Jeep dudes get their hands on it ......

All done  :icon_super:

They found a severed (not visible to the eye) data cable running under the airbox.

No parts needed only a couple of hours labour.  Seems I got away with it.

Pfewww.......

ok now then look at the cable under the airbox and see if you can improve the cable protection so that is doesn't get severed/damaged again
