Please Help,climate/aircon problems

Hi to all you BirtyDastards
I am in need of some desperate help please
I bought a 1998 4.0 grand cherokee orvis in june but now the problems are starting to happen
The worst problem i have is the climate control is stuck on hot
The temperature display works as usual but only blows out hot air,it still only blows out hot air even if i put the air con on
The only thing i have had done since owning it is have antifreeze put in by my local rad dealers
The problem seemed to happen about 9 days after having this done
Ive been to my local Jeep STEALERSHIP and they say they have never seen this before ? Hmm? (but there is a bit of a bad relationship between us since i pulled my cherokee sport from them and sent it to another garage because of the poor paintwork repair they did to it in august) so i guess this didnt help when i turned up for a diagnosis
They did offer to start at the aircon and start replacing EVERY part until they found the problem for me (which is nice of them!!)
Any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont have any spare BLANK CHQs to give to Jeep

sounds like the rotary selector switch thing has a problem, is it electrical or cable on an XJ, must say I have never needed to take it off/look

it still should go cold to hot even without the gas, sounds like the temp selector isnt doing its job

The ZJ Limited/Orvis HEVAC system is computer controlled and the temp and ait distribution achieved by a sieres of electrically operated flaps. The computer has a fault code facility. To enter the diagnostic mose;
Ignition on
Hold down A/C and recirc buttons, at the same time rotate the temp button one click clockwise.
Release buttons, you should get 00 on the screen
Rress A/C button, display will cycle codes between 1 and 64.

Thanks for the advice Mike i will get straight onto it tomorrow and post my findings,as long as the battery is not flat again
Is the computer some kind of reverse lottery machine?
You know its going to give you some numbers
But how much are those numbers going a cost

Mike i followed your advice and got 2 codes this morning
The first code is 55
The second code is 23
Sounds like it could be expensive to me, even though i havent a clue what it means

Hmm.... 55 doesn't appear in the manual, 23 means CCD message from PCM lost, which means it's lost communication with the engine controller.

Is temperature control all you've lost? does it do from defrost to vent and to the floor ok and everything?

Might be worth checking the conectors on the back of the control panel for bad pins and also checking the wiring to the blend air door motor (which mixes the hot/cold air)

Yes its only the temperature control ive lost, defrost to vents and to floor vents all seem to be working fine
But i did lose the rear windscreen wiper round about the same time as losing the temp control
Also today something else strange happened to the heating
I had the heating on the auto low setting and on the floor setting which was working fine until i went up a steep hill (well urm ok then,it was a  supermarket multistorey carpark) then suddenly it decided to blow out as fast as it could and tried to roast me alive for some reason
I think i may have to get the experts in on this one as its been years since i touched a car
The most wiring ive ever done was on my cherokee sport
I changed the drivers door cellunode and put a new battery on it
And that was all that ever needed doing to it in the 3 years i owned it

Sounds like something loose, perhaps the blend air flao has become disconnected from it's motor and is waving around. Trouble is, if it has to come apart it's a real nasty job. Might be one for a Jeep specialist if there's nothing obvious'

Looks like its going to be a Very Large trip out for wallet then
Do you think the rear windscreen wiper stopping could be related to the wiring or just a coincidence?
Also would it be ok to charge the battery up while its still on the Jeep or will it damage some sensors/electrics
Reason being is i dont have the code for the stereo
I think im starting to see why i bought this quite cheap off e-bay (because of its probs)
This Jeep used to belong to A Jeep Dealership in Birmingham as there demonstator,would it be worth contacting them to try to get the stereo code

The Dealership will supply the code for me, but at a cost
Ive got to take the Jeep in so they can remove the stereo,they then take the number off the back of the stereo and trace it to where the Jeep was originally sold, then that dealership has to e-mail the dealership doing the work the code
I was told the cost would be around 2 hours labour
Any way i traced it back to the Dealership that originally sold the Jeep, gave them a ring and they gave me a code
Only thing is the chap didnt know if it was the right code or not and said thats the only code he could find
So i am still desperate to know can i charge the battery while its still on the Jeep, especially now the snow is falling

Some car electrical places can decode car stereos if that helps :?

Plenty of car audio places can de-code or find out the code for you. I think either they or you have to remove the radio though - and show that you own the unit  :shock:

Thanks for the info Guys
If ever i have to take the battery off,or it wont charge i will bear that in mind
But if i do have to replace the battery i thought i would connect the battery charger to the Jeep terminals turn on and hopefully that will keep the Jeep electrics going so i dont lose the code while i change the battery
It worked on my deisel Cherokee just before i sold it using jump leads to keep the elecs alive
