Cherokee 2.5 TD Sport. SIEZED SPRING BOLTS
« on: March 20, 2011, 11:11:22 PM »

Hi, Just replaced my rear axle (and what a bastard of a job that was!)and would like to replace the rear springs.
Everything on this Jeep seems to be seized solid!!
The 'U' bolt nuts finally gave in after a weeks soak in penetrating oil and a 5 foot tube extention on the socket bar.
This makes me a bit wary of tackling the spring job,as the bolts are solid. As I see it I have a few options.
1) Buy a large 1" drive impact wrench (arggg!)
2) Burn 'em out with a cutting rod in my 200amp arc welder (might knacker the electronics.)
3) Leave the top leaf in and fit the bottom 3 leaves of the new springs, which would mean opening the clamps and reclosing round the old leaf.

I know seized spring bolts are a common problem, but if anyone has some tricks of the trade please help.
My worry is if the front bolts strip the thread in the captive nut inside the chassis...........you can guess the rest!!

All help appreciated  :100:

drill small hole in chassis rail opposite the bolt end so you can get a shot of anti-seize spray in there, keep soaking for a few days then take to someone with an air gun (you may need a 6" extension bar depending on airgun shape). They can be a tw80 to get off but I have had a 6ft breaker bar on one and have yet to strip / detatch the captive nut in the rail.

As above - should be able to undo it.

And also eat more meat - I can shear the rear ubolts with a 24" breaker bar :icon_rolleyes:
